Tips from the Team
You Are What You Eat
The common idea, "you are what you eat" originated from Jean Anthelme Brillat-Savarin in 1826. The original quote is actually "Dis-moi ce que tu manges, je te dirai ce que tu es.," which translates to "tell me what you eat and I will tell you what you are." However, in the 1930s, Victor Lindlahr, an American nutritionist, took this concept and created the catchier quote that we know well today. The basic concept is that your food choices determine your health. Poor food choices can lead to illness and disease.
In the past, I have asked clients to log their food (and beverage) intake for three days straight along with the portion size. The only rule was that anything you consumed (even one bite) would have to be recorded. More times than not, clients were really surprised to learn that they perceived their eating choices or habits to be healthier than they really were. It wasn't until they tracked everything and looked at the bigger picture that they saw how "a little of this and a little of that" can really add up. Additionally, they were surprised to learn that they had previously underestimated the amount as well. I'm not suggesting that you cut out all treats, but its helpful to be aware of what you are actually consuming.
This week, give food tracking a try for three days. Whether you record it in an app or traditional paper, I challenge everyone to bring awareness to your food choices. Only once we see the big picture, can we start to work towards achieving our nutrition goals.
March into Spring
Spring is in the air! According to an English proverb, “March winds and April showers will bring May flowers.” March might bring unpredictable weather, but it does bring budding trees, blooming daffodils, and a sense of awakening and renewal. You start to feel a sense of happiness as the brain releases the neurotransmitter serotonin due to the exposure to additional sunlight as days get longer. Spring is an excellent time for renewed focus as we come out of the “funk” the winter season can bestow upon us. Some favorite spring activities for any age:
· Commit to lunchtime or evening walks.
· Dust off the bike for a ride.
· Fly a kite.
· Visit the cherry blossoms in Washington, D.C.
· Go for a hike.
· Bird watching.
· Go to the park.
I hope you can get outside to enjoy some fresh air and warm sun on your skin!
