January / February in the Library
2014
Thank You to D-LIT and the Dedham Education Foundation!
I am happy to announce the DMS Library is the recipant of two grants this year! We received a grant from the Dedham Library Inovation Team (D-LIT) of $700 to put toward Makerspace activities in the library! We also recived a $500 grant from the Dedham Education Foundation to update our biography collection. Thank you to both!
It’s 2015!
Start a new adventure! Or quest…or romance... A display of a variety of genres to kick off the new year welcomed students and faculty back from their winter vacation.
No time to read? No problem!
Everyone always seems to be short on time this time of year, so for the second half of January the spotlight was on short stories. Grab a short story and read however many you have time for!
Blind Date...With a Book!
It felt like we were hardly in school in February! There was only time for one display, but it was a fun one! Students were asked to go on a “blind date with a book.” Mystery books were wrapped in paper with words written on it that described that book. The only way for a student to find out what the book was was to take a chance and check it out!
DMS Participates in the MSLA Bookmark Contest
In January, DMS participated in the Massachusettes School Library Association’s Bookmark Contest. This year’s them was “Look What I Discovered at My School Library!” Students from all grades submitted book mark entries. Three winners were chosen, Kathryn H., Shakendine K., and Grace D., and their book marks were sent out to the state-wide contest. All the bookmarks are on display outside the library. Go check them out!
Did you know the library has magazines and newspapers?
We have a number of popular and educational magazines, as well as The Boston Globe and local Dedham papers. Check out the full list.
Classes in the Library!
6th Grade
Ms. Gillis’ class was in the library hard at work researching countries in January. Ms. Unger’s students came to the library to hear book talks and then check out books which they will use to give book talks to their class. A poetry cart was put together for Ms. Huff’s students to use in their room, and we have plenty more poetry books in the library too!
7th Grade
Ms. Bloch’s science students were studying biomes and came to the library to use a LibGuide, research, and learn about note taking and bibliographies. Ms. Cummings’ students came to the library in February to hear a few book talks and find a new book.
8th Grade
In Library research students finished research their technology in educational topics using the subscription databases. They wrote an essay, letter, or newspaper article as their final product, and then shared their findings in groups. Students then began learning about copyright law, and are taking a more in-depth look at fair use and how it applies to the work they do in school.
I'd Love to Work With You!
