St. Columba's Primary School
NEWSLETTER | TERM 4 | WEEK 7 | 24 NOVEMBER 2022
From the Principal
Dear Parents and Carers,
Well done to our Year 6 students on a wonderful last assembly on Monday. They were very creative and performed beautifully. I have to say it is very pleasing to see how confidently they spoke and performed. I am sure that there are some budding performers in the making. Many thanks to Mr Popadynec, Mrs O'Brien, Mrs Daniele and Mrs McDonald for co-ordinating. It is not always easy to prepare the last Year 6 assembly and to produce such a high quality performance.
Reports will once again be available online from Wednesday, 7 December. If you have any questions please see your classroom teacher.
I wish to advise families that double stream classes have been shuffled in preparation for the start of the 2023 school year. The teachers looked at a number of criteria in determining the split. This will include academic, social, friendship and gender. The school will look at family requests however, requests for individual teachers are not a part of the process.
The Carol’s Night and P&F sundowner will be on Friday, 2 December on the school bottom oval. It is a requirement that students from PP - Year 6 attend, as each class will be singing a carol. The carol singing for all classes should take approximately 45 minutes to an hour. The evening will begin with the Choir singing from 5:45pm and the classes from 6:00pm. Students will need to be dropped at their classroom by 5:20pm.
2023 class lists and teachers will be disseminated to families next Tuesday via email.
God Bless and keep safe.

The beauty of Advent is that it is a season, not a day. Preparing for Advent as Catholics means that we can enjoy the richness of our faith which helps us to prepare our hearts and minds for celebrating the coming of the Christ child on Christmas.
What is the Advent season in the Catholic Church?
Advent is a four-week spiritual preparation for celebrating Jesus’ birth. Advent begins four Sundays before Christmas day. We have four weeks of Mass readings and prayers to help us focus on Jesus and what He has done for us.
The First Sunday of Advent is this weekend – Sunday, 27 November.
What does Advent prepare us for?
Advent is a gift to us. The four weeks of Advent help us to prepare us to truly celebrate Christmas, to contemplate and understand (as much as we are humanly able) the great reality of God becoming man for our sakes because of His great love for each of us.
Advent gives us the opportunity to reflect more on the truths about Jesus and our Catholic faith so we can spiritually prepare our hearts for celebrating Jesus’ birth on Christmas.
How do we prepare for Advent?
Advent itself is a time of preparation. We do not necessarily need to prepare for Advent itself but use the time of Advent to prepare for Christ’s coming on Christmas.
Here are some ideas of things you can do with your family to help prepare during Advent for Christmas.
· Pray more
· Go to Mass
· Go to Reconciliation
· Have and Advent wreath - An Advent wreath is a wreath with four candles. Usually, there are three purple candles and one pink candle. Each Sunday in Advent, one new candle is lit.
· Practice Advent traditions each year
There are many ways during Advent that we can prepare our hearts and minds for celebrating Jesus’ birth at Christmas.

The Annual St Vincent de Paul Christmas Appeal is about to begin, and St Columba’s Primary School is excited to be involved once again.
What is the Vinnies Christmas Appeal?
For many people, Christmas is a joyful time of year however, the sad reality is that 13.3% of Australians are living in poverty. Of these, 731,300 are children who may not get their Christmas wish. Your support can make a difference.
Our generosity through the Vinnies Christmas Appeal can provide urgent relief for a family who’s doing it tough this Christmas and give them hope for a better future.
How does St Columba’s get involved?

Hi everyone, we are on the home stretch!
This week the P&F brought in the big guns - 2022 WA Australian of the Year, Paul Litherland from Surf Online Safe. Paul gave two presentations to our community this week; one for the students and one for the parents. We really hope you got something out of this. We are passionate about online safety and want to keep our commitment to providing opportunities and education in this space. If you have any feedback, please don’t hesitate to contact me.
I would like to take this opportunity to make special mention of Todd Dawson. Most of you will be lucky enough to know Todd through the Dads of St Columba's. This is his last year with the school.
On behalf of the P&F, thank you Todd for all your dedication, support and generosity you have given to St Columbas’ over the years. You are an absolute legend and will be missed.
Have a great week everyone!
