SBS Students Hard at Work
The 7th graders worked with Hands on Equations in math with Mr. Shimek and Mrs. Harmeyer first quarter. This is a fun way to understand algebra. Riley Malison said, “ It made it easier to understand when you used your hands to represent the equations.” The steps help you break down the problem. Each number and variable is represented by dice or pawns while placed on a scale. Fran Smith liked it because, “It helped us get a hang of algebra by visually understanding it. It was also fun and made it seem easy. I like small groups or doing hands on things by myself.” While, Nico Bratz thought, “It was easier to understand because we can see it and interact with each piece. When I write it down I do not really get it but when I use each piece I understand it. I finally understand algebra.”
On October 17, four 5th grade students attended a Science Immersion Day at MSOE. Holly West, Bella Pulvermacher, Bella Smith and Monroe Knapp were selected through an application process. The girls toured the MSOE campus with Ms. Roberts in small groups. Holly West and Bella P. thought the campus was huge and in the city. We also got to see how cement is made. Bella S. said the 3D printing lab was really cool.
Pilgrim Wax Museum
Third graders in Mrs. Leonard’s and Ms. Drew’s classrooms have been busy learning and preparing for Thanksgiving in a different way. Over the next few weeks, these students will be integrating their Social Studies into all other areas of the curriculum. Applying the knowledge they will gain through their Social Studies unit, the students will create their own retelling of history through a Wax Museum.
The children are collecting information from books, articles, and websites on the first Thanksgiving story. After being placed into cooperative groups, they need to work together to write a script for their topic as well as create a backdrop for their presentation. On Monday, November 20th and Tuesday, November 21st, we will be performing our retelling of the first Thanksgiving for K-5 classrooms. There will be a special parent presentation on Tuesday, November 21st at 12:30 pm. We are ending the unit of study with a Thanksgiving feast for our students and parents. The children are enjoying this learning experience and have had the opportunity to practice a lifelong skill - working as a team!!
