Transition from 5th Grade to Middle School
The Academic Coordinator Team has started the placement process for our current 5th graders as they enter into middle school next year. Parent input is a valuable component of the placement process. In order to provide input for your student’s middle school placement in ELA, Math, and Science, we give you an opportunity to provide the committee with your insights via a Google Form linked below.
Grade 6 students are placed into classes based on achievement, ability, and overall well-being. In early January, Academic Coordinator Team, Middle School Administrators, and School Counselors presented on the Middle School Transition Process. This informational meeting detailed social, emotional, and academic shifts at the middle level. Presenters also describe the differences in course offerings and support available. Video links to these presentations, as well as the slides used, are available below:

PRESCHOOL IN THE GREENWICH PUBLIC SCHOOLS
Preschool Program to place one new classroom at Julian Curtiss in the 2022-2023 school year
Overview of the Program
The Greenwich Public Schools Integrated Preschool Program serves both youngsters with identified special needs and those who are typically developing. Through a structured, center-based program, each child participates in instructional activities/experiences, which address the domains of communication, cognition, self-help, fine/gross motor and social emotional development.
The Guiding Principles and Curriculum of the Preschool Program
- Early Learning and development are multidimensional: the development domains of cognitive, personal and social, physical and creative expression aesthetic development are interrelated and throughout the day.
- Young children are capable and competent.
- There are individual differences in rates of development among children.
- Children will exhibit a range of skills and competencies in any area of development.
- Knowledge of child growth and development and consistent expectations are essential to maximizing educational experiences for children and to developing and implementing programs.
- Families are the primary caregivers and educators of their young children.
- Young children learn through active exploration of their environment through child-initiated and teacher-selected activities.
Students who will turn 3 years old but will NOT turn 5 years old by December 31, 2022 are eligible to apply for entrance to the GPS Preschool Program. Entrance into the program is based on a lottery.
First Priority
Second Priority
Youngsters applying to a GPS "magnet" preschool location (Julian Curtiss, North Street, Old Greenwich) will be selected based on a lottery system. As the names are selected through the lottery, consideration for availability is based on gender and age to ensure the classes are appropriately balanced. Priority consideration will also be given to youngsters who are economically disadvantaged.
