Congratulations to our Student Council for receiving the United Way Service Above Self Award for groups. The Student Council received $500 for their budget from United Way.
We have an amazing service oriented school thanks to the hard work of the sponsors of Student Council: Elizabeth Sippel, Pam Rutherford, Elizabeth Anderson, Laura Zimmerman Clark, and Lauren Wietor.

Learning to Code
Student as Teacher
Coding
In preparation for January’s Digital Learning Day Ms. Tucker and Mr. Yates are teaching students to code. What does that mean? It means when you walk in to their enhancements you hear them talking about algorithms used to do the computer coding required in games and applications.
What a wonderful experience for students to see the real world connection of coding and computer programming. It might even be their choice for a future career.!
December 9th PTA Meeting
Ms. Lineberger then explained how the arts can be integrated into STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics). When the arts are integrated the acronym becomes STEAM. Mrs. Phillips demonstrated push and pull (science) on tumbling mats. Ms. Yelvington demonstrated engineering/mathematics with marshmallows and toothpicks to make cubes. Ms. Lineberger showed parents how the iPad geoboard application can be used to plan art.
It was a wonderful evening with our amazing Overton families!

Mrs. Tunks and Retirement
At the PTA Advisory Board and December PTA meeting I announced my retirement date of March 1, 2015. The district will start the process of advertisement, interviewing, and hiring a new principal come January.
Dr. Moody, Kristi Rhone, Alesia Burnette will work with the staff and parents identifying characteristics wanted in the new principal. They will also ask for teachers and parents to be on the interview committee.
It has been a privilege working 10 years at Overton with your children. After 31 years of being an educator it is time for me to retire and spend time with my husband.
Thank you for all the wonderful memories I will carry with me.
