SLE Weekly Update December 3, 2021
Good afternoon East families,
This week has been emotionally challenging due to the horrific situation at Oxford High School and our unexpected closures. Many of our students and families did the right thing this week by notifying us about concerning posts and we immediately shared the information with law enforcement. We will continue to encourage students and parents to remember, “If you see something, say something” throughout the year.
As you know there have been many social media posts circulating across the county that were investigated by law enforcement that have been deemed as “not credible” or as “hoax threats”. If your student is using social media regularly, please monitor their use and talk to them about the sites they are visiting. You can find suggestions to help you monitor their social media by reviewing the following resource: 10 Ways for Parents To Monitor You Child’s Social Media Use. You may also want to review the consequences of making false threats on social media as well. Resources to help you navigate this conversation can be found by clicking here. Additional information regarding state laws regarding false threats can be found by clicking here.
When we return to classes, we will begin with a moment of silence in rememberance of those lost and impacted by the Oxford tragedy. Additionally, teachers will take time to review ALICE protocols and give students an opportunity to ask questions about safety procedures. The district has provided teachers with talking points to help with these conversations. We have been working closely with the Sheriff’s department to follow up on any social media posts that have been concerning and we will continue to do so. As a reminder, students attempting to enter the building must show their ID to gain entry, and out of an abundance of caution, students will not be able to go to their cars for forgotten items during the school day.
If you have concerns or questions, please feel free to contact our office.
After School Events
All after school activities (whether at SLCS or off site) as well as events hosted at South Lyon Community Schools’ buildings are cancelled until Monday, December 5th.
THE GIVING TREE
The South Lyon East Key Club is sponsoring the Giving Tree this year to help 4 East families that are in need of some assistance this holiday season. Beginning November 23rd students and staff can stop by the Student Services office to pick an ornament off the tree, then purchase the item and bring it back unwrapped with the tag attached. All items should be returned to student services by December 15th. If you would like to contribute by purchasing an egift card from stores such as Target, Walmart, Kohls, etc. those can be emailed to Mrs. Lewandowski at lewandowskil@slcs.us. Please contact Mrs. Lewandowski with any questions.

As a reminder, families are only able to make pathway changes from January 3-7, 2022. Changes would be effective as of January 31, 2022.
Please note, requests to move out of VLP and into in-person are dependent on space being available within in-person sections. Information regarding secondary schedules will be sent following the January 3rd through 7th pathway change window. Information will be sent home soon regarding how to request a pathway change.
