Findley Flyer- December 5 , 2019
Findley Oaks Elementary-Home of the Findley Falcons!
Message from Principal Christopher
It is hard to believe that it is almost the end of the first semester! I am so proud of our students and how hard they have worked all semester. We have eleven more instructional days left and we are focused on bell to bell teaching and instruction that is rigorous and relevant.
Next week we will recognize many of our students at our character assemblies. Congratulations to all of the students who will be honored this semester. Character education is so important for our students and has a positive impact on academics, attendance, and behavior.
The week before Thanksgiving we had our Follett Book Fair. It was wonderful seeing students, teachers, staff, and parents book shopping! Thanks to Amy Rubin, Lauren Misrahi, and all of our wonderful parent volunteers. Without you our book fair would not have been such a success. Findley loves to read!

Calling All Artists!
Would you like to create a holiday tree ornament to be displayed at the Georgia Department of Education? Well here’s your chance! Richard Woods, Georgia’s School Superintendent, is looking for students to create a holiday tree ornament to help ready his office for the Winter season. This is not a contest, so all ornaments sent will be displayed. Ornaments could be made from paper, clay, Model Magic, polymer clay, popsicle sticks, fabric, wood, etc., just remember, they are supposed to hang, so nothing too heavy! Your decoration could be winter-themed or holiday- themed. Make sure to attach a tag to your decoration that includes your name, your school’s name (Findley Oaks), and your art teacher’s name (Ms. Cessna). Please be aware that unfortunately, these ornaments will not be returned. Ms. Cessna will be collecting the ornaments until Monday, December 9, at which time, she will box them and send them all as a group to the Department of Education. If you have any questions, please contact Ms. Cessna at cessnap@fultonschools.org.

Winter Weather Preparedness Week- THIS WEEK
The weather outside isn’t frightful yet, but the Georgia Emergency Management and Homeland Security Agency, in partnership with the National Weather Service and GDOT, is gearing up for Winter Weather Preparedness Week on Dec. 2-6. This week encourages Georgians to prepare for inclement winter weather by learning about winter weather threats, reviewing or creating a family communications plan and considering what items to put in their Ready kits.

School Climate Star Rating Survey
Parents/Guardians,
Please take a moment to complete the School Climate Star Rating Survey. Survey responses are anonymous, self-reported, and will be submitted directly to the Georgia Department of Education for analysis. This is important feedback for our climate star rating. Thank you!
District Calendar Changes
At its work session on October 10, the Fulton County School Board approved making April 21, 2020, and May 19, 2020, “Digital Learning Days” for students while maintaining them as regular work days for employees. A Digital Learning Day is an opportunity for students to engage in off-site learning instead of attending school.
Since April 21 and May 19 are state-wide election days, there is high-volume participation of the public at polling stations located in our schools, and this increases the potential for security concerns. By utilizing digital learning activities, students will be able to maintain their focus on instruction even though they are not on campus.
Here is a summary of the recent calendar adjustments:
· March 13, 2020 remains a teacher workday.
· March 24, 2020 (GA Presidential primary election) will be a teacher workday.
· April 21, 2020 (state-wide election) will be a student Digital Learning Day and a teacher professional development day.
· May 19, 2020 (state-wide election) will be a student Digital Learning Day and a teacher professional development day.
We want to hear from you!
Pre-Approved Absences
The district allows excused absences for the following:
Absences not exceeding a cumulative total of six (6) days per school year for the following reasons, but only if the absence has been pre-approved by the principal or designee:
- scholarship interviews/college visitations
- travel opportunity with educational benefits
- graduation or wedding of an immediate family member
- specialized, supplemental or extracurricular experience
- other circumstances that are mutually agreeable to the parent and principal
Message From the Counselor, Kate Hernandez
HONESTY is our character trait for December. We’ve been very busy learning about honesty, what it means and why it’s important. Below are some ways that you can help your child to continue to learn about the theme of honesty through reading, talking and practicing.
Read About It!:
Edward Fudwumper Fibbed Big, by Berkeley Breathead
Sam Tells Stories, by Thierry Robberecht
Liar, Liar Pants on Fire, by Diane de Groat
Practice It!
Help your kids learn the difference between a truth and a lie with this simple game. You and your child take turns saying statements and the other person has to decide if it is a truth or a lie. A great game to play in the care or while you are waiting!
Talk About It!
Here are some discussion points to help you talk about honesty with your child:
- Has anyone ever been dishonest with you before? How did it feel?
- Was there ever a time when it was hard to be honest?
- How will others view you if you are honest? How will they view you if you are dishonest?
