Extended Day Program Newsletter

January 4, 2016

Dear Colleagues,

Happy New Year!! Hope you had a restful break and are re-engergized for the new year!

Our soccer season officially ended with our banquets the last week of school. Flag football permission slips will be sent to you in a separate e-mail for distribution this week. We will also be conducting some training for all Flag Football coaches to set them up for success this season. The Flag Football season will run until Spring Break.

We also have our Duct Tape Fashion Show coming up in February!

There is rain in the forecast for this week so I anticipate the students coming with lots of extra energy since outdoor physical activity might be reduced. We will have to have some extra STEM stations, art, and indoor activities set up.

Here's to a great 2016~

Christine

Easy Group Management During STEM

Environment

  • Ensure that the environment is kid-friendly safe, comfortable, and FUN!
  • Create separate areas for different types of activity, as well as boundaries within the program to help set and maintain expectations.
  • Create systems for storing materials that make them easily accessible and easily cleaned up—have cleaning supplies readily available, and then teach kids about how to use the materials and storage systems within the environment.

Activities

  • Plan activities and experiences that are developmentally appropriate, hands-on and minds-on, and engage student interests (combine things like art and STEM, STEM and movement).
  • Include specific learning objectives and then use questions during experiences to further engage kids in learning.
  • Practice advanced planning, but be flexible based on student needs.
