THE WTSD WATCH
Your One-Stop Source for All Things Happening in Our Schools
From the Superintendent of Schools
Last month I introduced a series of ideas that are being kicked around for the 2016-17 school year. I appreciate all of the dialogue and feedback that has been given so far. We will be continuing these conversations throughout the month of February. Please feel free to join us at our Parent Interaction Meeting (Feb. 1), our Board of Education Work-Session (Feb. 10) or you may choose to attend our regular Board of Education Meeting (Feb. 17).
We are also moving along with our much needed curriculum realignment. I would like to officially welcome Mrs. Julie Lyons, our new Supervisor of Curriculum & Instruction. Mrs. Lyons will be working with all certificated staff to ensure that our students are getting what they need to continue to succeed.
As always, I welcome your comments. Please feel free to email me or contact me via social media at any time.
Yours In Education,
Jay Eitner

Atco Elementary
Atco Elementary School has been working on various concepts during the month of January. The kindergarten students began Writer’s Workshop this month. In Writer’s Workshop the students are learning to write narrative stories about events that have occurred such as, a snow day, a birthday party, and weekend fun. Additionally, these students are developing their writing skills through the use of speech bubbles. Kindergarten mathematics has students adding numbers under ten and continuing to practice counting to 100. In first grade mathematics, the students have been working on counting to 120 using various methods of skip counting, i.e. counting by 2, 5, and 10. First graders have also been learning to ask questions to identify key information in text and have been learning to write for informational purposes. This is the beginning of learning to research and gather information to inform readers about specific content. We are looking forward to the 100th day of school that occurs in February and is quickly approaching!
Thomas Richards Elementary
Thomas Richards' students welcomed January with some fun activities to get us back into the swing of things after the break. We had our second annual Lego Contest and our students put together some awesome creations which were displayed in our media center. Thank you to all of our participants and our staff members for organizing the event.
Teachers and students celebrated the life and legacy of Martin Luther King Jr. through various projects, learning activities, and artistic displays. Some children had the opportunity to listen to Martin Luther King's famous "I Have a Dream" speech. Living the legacy is a goal students and staff strive for each day by focusing on tolerance and unity.
Earlier this month Mr. Davidson, our principal, had TR's Bucket Filler Lunch. Mr. Davidson spends time with randomly selected Bucket Fillers and the children have the opportunity to share their ideas for how we can continue to improve our school. This also provides a means for the students to learn more about Mr. Davidson and what he does when he is not working at TR. A very special thank you to our TR moms who helped to organize the lunch!! Most of all, thank you to our students for displaying great character!!
To all of our families we offer you our thanks and gratitude for your continued support. As always, we are here for you and your children.
TR students studied animals that are seen in the winter.
Mr. Davidson has lunch with several students.
Happy 2016! We had a fun time celebrating.
G.I.R.L.S Group
G.I.R.L.S. Girls in Real Life Situations - School Counselor Debbie Schmidt began this group for 5th-grade girls this month. Students will learn how to deal with difficult situations, strengthen communication skills and build healthy peer relationships. The group will meet once a week for 7 weeks.
Smores & Space!
Miss Catania and Miss Walsh's sixth-grade class is using Smore.com to create informative newsletters about the planets in our solar system. Students are using the NASA website to gather reliable information.
It's rehearsal time!
Theatre rehearsals for the WES play are underway! A record number of WES students are involved. More to come next month!
