Updates:
Thank you!
We've had a busy couple weeks in 3rd grade and I want to extend a special thank you to the parents who have either volunteered for Big Backyard or helped at our fall party. I know I speak for both the students and myself when I say we could not do these fun activities without you. Thank you!

Curriculum Updates
Social Emotional Learning:
Bridge School's monthly theme for November is gratitude. This week during our SEL block, we learned that gratitude means feeling thankful and appreciative for what we have. By recognizing what we are grateful for, we can also improve our happiness. Students also learned that gratitude isn't just being thankful for big things in their lives, its about noticing the little things too. Throughout the month, students will complete several gratitude activities and projects.
Math:
In math, we are learning about multiplication concepts. This unit is a brief introduction to multiplication. During this unit, students will learn multiplication language and model multiplication problems using equal groups and arrays. Our next unit will deepen students' understanding of multiplication, by applying our newly learned skills to an investigations project. More information to come!
Writing:
This week, we began our persuasive writing unit. In this unit, students are writing speeches about things they want to change in the world, people who need more recognition, or their favorite things. This week, we will discuss what is means to be persuasive and begin to draft speeches in their writing notebook.
Reading:
This week, we started a unit focused on reading mystery books. Using the book, The Diamond Mystery as a guide, students are learning to identify the mystery, main detective, main problems, witnesses, suspects, and clues in their own mystery books. Below are some of the strategies we will discuss:
Word Study:
In word study we continue to explore closed syllable patterns. Over the past two weeks, we learned when to use -k or -ck to end a word and closed syllable exceptions (rule breakers). See the pictures below for the word study rules we follow in class.
Social Studies/Science:
In social studies, we continue to learn about Massachusetts geography. In the coming weeks, we will dive into our science curriculum. We will being exploring weather patterns in Massachusetts and the United States.
Ask your child
- What does gratitude mean? What are you grateful for?
- How do you know when to use -ck or -k to end a word? (option: ask your child to spell the following words: trunk, puck, shack, milk, tank, luck, stick, and pack)
- What is a sleuth?
- What are some examples of multiplication language? Show me an example.
