Language Arts
- Reading: We read the story "Owen and Mzee" about an unexpected friendship between a baby hippo and a tortoise. We reviewed compare and contrast and fact and opinion.
- Writing: We worked on a compare and contrast essay.
- Grammar: We continued to review commas in a series, a compound sentence, in a date, and when listing city and state.
- Night at the Museum: The students did an amazing job on Thursday evening! They all worked so hard on their biographies, costumes and lines! I was so impressed with how well they memorized their lines. Thank you parents for all your support at home with this project.
- Summer reading challenge: We've been collaborating with the Harbor Springs Public Library to create a summer reading challenge for the 4th graders. We will be visiting the library before the end of the school year so the students can all get a library card. We will also take a tour of the library and learn about the reading challenge. Please see the letter in the Friday folder and sign and return by May 26.
Math
This week students reviewed the following geometry skills and concepts: lines, rays, angles, parallel, perpendicular, intersecting, symmetry, quadrilaterals. Students also continued to work with area and perimeter. They were challenged with finding the unknown measure of a rectangle when given the area or the perimeter. Some students are continuing to work on their multiplication and division facts.
Science
This week we learned about ice wedging and glaciers. We took a test on what we learned. Mr. Walstrom came for his last visit and talked to us about making websites for a business. We conducted investigations about similarities and patterns in different types of waves. We read about this subject as well. We also got a chance to take the science M-Step.
