Week of March 4, 2019

Save The Dates

There are several dates coming up in March, April, and May to mark on your calendar that you may or may not know about. There will be more details to come on all of the night events as we get closer to them.

March 11-15, 1:30 pm: Minimum Day Dismissal. Conferences all week. See details below.

Tuesday, March 26, 7:15 am: Trimester 2 Honor Roll Breakfast.

Friday, March 28, 7 pm: We will be showing the movie Angst and have a panel discussion with high school students and experts after. We are finding that a lot of kids have anxiety and depression and feel that it is important to address this topic. Students will also see the movie that day during school and be able to ask questions to a panel.

Friday, March 29: Super Minimum Day. Dismissal at 12:06 pm.

Monday, April 1- Friday, April 5: Spring Break. No School.

Thursday, April 11, 6-7:30 pm: Open House/STEAM Fair.

Thursday, April 25, 7 pm: Spring Concert.

Thursday, May 2, 7 pm: Vaping/Juul Parent Information Night. Sequoia Union High School District is doing this same evening in April. I asked the organizer to bring this presentation to RCSD because there is a huge increasing trend nationwide of middle school and high school students vaping. Kennedy will host because I organized this, but we will open this up to all parents in the District. (Same thing with Angst in March).

AVID Field Trip To UC Berkeley

This past Tuesday our AVID classes visited UC Berkeley for a tour and to learn more about college life. Around ninety students attended the trip. Below are some pictures.

Math Acceleration For Next Year

This past week I found out that the tests students will take to determine if they can accelerate in math will take place at the end of May. I will continue working with students after school in March, April, and May who want more of a challenge in math and/or may want to accelerate next year.

I unfortunately have to reschedule the planned 6th grade session for this coming Monday due to a meeting that has come up. Instead we will meet on Monday, March 11, at 1:40 pm in the library. 7th grade will still meet as planned, Wednesday, March 6, at 3:15 pm in the library.

Second Trimester Grades

The end of the trimester was this past Friday. Teachers have some time to finish grading this coming week. So grades are not final as of now. Many of you are aware that we have had two teachers out a lot in January and February, Mr. Baird and Ms. Harris. I will be making a decision early this week about how we will determine grades for students with these teachers.

Principal's Coffee

The next Principal’s Coffee is this Thursday. Someone will be coming from the bond team to share information and plans for the different phases of school renovations that will take place over the next couple of years and take questions. We will go over information about the State science test that will take place in May for 8th graders. This is the first year that scores will count on this test. We will conclude by visiting some classrooms.

8th graders will be going on a field trip Friday to the Exploratorium. We are still missing a bunch of permission slips, so please make sure you have signed your student’s and that your student has returned the permission slip. We still need parent chaperones as well. Please contact the office if you can help chaperone.

STAR Reading

As mentioned last week, students took the STAR reading assessment for the third time this year. Below is the chart, so you can see your student’s grade level equivalent for reading. Scores will be posted this week if they haven’t been already in PowerSchool as a non-counting item so that you can see the score. The score will also appear on your student’s report card. Since we are now mid-year, you should be looking at the middle column on the chart below.

Spring Conferences

The week of March 11 we have spring conferences, which means we are on a Minimum Day schedule all week. Dismissal is at 1:30 pm. You can drop in and meet with teachers any day after school that week from 1:50-3 pm. No appointments are necessary.

Morning Safety Reminders

Please do not drop students off on the opposite side of the streets unless they are going to use the crosswalks. We don’t want students to get hit by a car. Also, please do not park your cars in the white zone on Goodwin.
