Second Grade Study Trip
We are so excited to start this new year (semester) learning about our local community through the world of commerce. Wednesday, Thursday or Friday, February 6th, 7th, or 8th we are going to Castleton Square Mall to learn about producers, consumers, goods, and services. Students will explore the world of retail by identifying whether stores provide goods and/or services, using cardinal directions on a map, and enjoying a meal at Buca Di Beppo®.

The Great Kindness Challenge
Dear TCE Families,
Thorpe Creek is participating in The Great Kindness Challenge the week of January 28th to February 1st. The Great Kindness Challenge is a positive and encouraging initiative that is taking place in 103 other countries and over 19,000 schools. As part of the challenge each student will be encouraged to complete 50 acts of kindness in the week.
Another part of The Great Kindness Challenge includes raising funds to help support/build a clinic in a small community in Liberia. We would love for students to bring in change to support this cause! Thank you in advance for your support of the Kind Coins Campaign!
We will celebrate all the acts of kindness that are happening around Thorpe Creek with spirit days. They are:
Monday, January 28th
Crazy about Kindness- Wear your crazy socks day
Tuesday, January 29th
Hats off for kindness- Wear a hat day
Wednesday, January 30th
Team up for Kindness- Wear a sports jersey or favorite team color.
Thursday, January 31st
Cozy up for Kindness- Wear your P.J.'s
Friday, February 1st
Kindness Matters at TCE- Wear your TCE spirit wear
We will be starting a new math unit on money at the beginning of next week. I have found in the past that it is very beneficial to use real money. I would like for each child to have his/her own set to use while we are working on this unit. Please send the following coins in a sealed plastic bag with your child’s name on it.
We will begin using these coins on Monday 12/28). If you are unable to send in these coins, I will have fake money for your child to use.
I will send the bags home with your child at the end of the money unit. As always, thanks for your support!
A Message from Global Studies!
Global Studies Newsletter
*** Important information regarding Chinese Snack Tasting is included in this newsletter and your response is needed if you decide to opt-out.***
In the recent two weeks 1st to 4th grade students have been learning how to say some animals in Chinese. 2nd-4th grade students are doing a great job using the verbs “like” and “have” to form sentences like “I have cats”, “You don’t have dogs”, “I like horses”, and “You don’t like snake”. They also learned how to ask questions like “Do you like horses?” and “Don’t you like rabbits?” in Chinese. I am so impressed with how quickly they learn! 1st grade students had lots of fun learning about the 12 Chinese zodiac animals and coloring Happy New Year 2019, the Year of Pig.
During the week of February 11, 2019, students will be tasting a Chinese snack during their Global Studies class. Please see picture below for the nutrition information. If you do NOT wish your child to taste the snack, please fill out the Opt-Out form by following the link below and submit your response by February 1st, 2019. We will also send out paper permission slips home for certain students with allergy concerns. Thank you for your attention!
January 31 from 5:30-7:00 pm. STEAM is an educational term to describe real-world opportunities for students to learn with science, technology, engineering, the arts, and math. At the TCE Family STEAM Night, TCE students and their family members of all ages are welcome to come and participate in a variety of unique, educational STEAM experiences. Participants will travel as a family (children with their adults) to share in the learning process! Pizza and water will be available in the cafeteria for families to purchase. We hope to see you there!
Please consider sending a snack to school with your child each day. Our approved list (to keep all of our Cardinals safe - especially those living with food allergies) include:
Pepperidge Farm Goldfish
We appreciate donations for our students that are without a snack, as well. Thank you for considering!

We are Learning
You can get your child ready for the unit by asking the value of each coin. Pulling out a group of various coins and asking your child how much money you have total. We will be working on these skills in class. We will also talk about how we put coins in order from the greatest value to the smallest value to make it easier to count our coins.
This week, we learned more about trade. The kids used play doh and made goods and then went around the room to trade their items with another person. We had a really good conversation afterwards about this subject.
Our Mystery Doug question this week was, "Why Do We Get Hiccups?". That lead us to questions about other things like, why do we get goose bumps or why do we get a brain freeze when drinking cold liquid. The kids did a little research to find the answers to their questions!
