MESSAGE FROM THE PRINCIPAL
Dear CMS Families,
Is SPRING in the air? Punxsutawney Phil did see his shadow which means we're IN for an early spring! The change in weather has changed some behaviors as well.
We kindly remind students to adhere to our school's dress code. As temperatures rise, we want to ensure that clothing choices remain appropriate for an educational setting. Please refer to the school handbook.
The past two days, Nurse Jen, Ms. Paroubek and I have been busy during recess. We understand that the warmer weather brings excitement and energy, but it's crucial that students continue to demonstrate respectful and safe behavior during outdoor activities. NO FOOTBALL SCHOLARSHIPS ARE AWARDED DURING RECESS.
On the positive side, I would like to recognize our after school walkers for their commitment to safety and using the crosswalk on North Street.
SAFETY DRILL
The safety and security of our students and staff are our top priorities, and conducting regular drills is an essential part of our commitment to maintaining a safe learning environment. I wanted to inform you about an upcoming practice lockdown drill scheduled for February 21. During the drill, students and staff will follow established lockdown procedures. This includes securing classrooms, remaining quiet, and awaiting further instructions. Chardon police offers as well as our SRO will assist with the drill.
FROM NURSE JEN
I would like to clarify services I provide daily in the clinic. I am allowed to do daily care, first aid and emergent care. If any over the counter medication or prescribed meds are needed there are required forms allowing me to administer the medication/medicine. I have copies of the forms in the clinic and they are also available online under the HEALTH SERVICES page. If your child is in a boot, on crutches, in a sling, has a cast for safety reasons, we need a note from the treating doctor. A letter is also required for any treatments or accommodations that may be needed outside a normal educational day. For example: extended time to get to class, excused from gym, indoor recess, restricted from using the steps, etc.. It would be best practice to ALWAYS provide the school with a Dr.'s note if they have an appointment during the school day
If you have any questions please give me a call, 440-286-0457.
Thank you. - Jennifer Trittschuh RN BSN LSN
BLIZZARD BAGS
Last week Chardon Local School District had our fifth calamity day of the 2023-24 school year. If we exceed the allotted five (5) Calamity Days authorized in Ohio Revised Code 3313.48, the make-up plan known as “blizzard bags'' will be instituted. The lessons, which can be made up in exchange for two (2) days of instruction, can be found on the teacher’s Google Classroom by 10:00 am on the day of a calamity day. If you do not have internet access, please inform your child’s teacher so paper copies can be provided for you. Students who do not complete the lessons in the given time frame could receive an incomplete or failing grade, in addition to receiving an unexcused absence for the day that the blizzard bag replaces instruction.
JUNIOR ACHIEVEMENT-VOLUNTEERS
Chardon Middle School is partnering with Junior Achievement, a nonprofit organization dedicated to inspiring and preparing students for success in a global economy. This program provides valuable insights into financial literacy, entrepreneurship, and work readiness.
We are seeking enthusiastic parents to volunteer for a one-day commitment to deliver the Junior Achievement program in our classrooms. No prior teaching experience is necessary, as Junior Achievement provides all the necessary training and materials.
If you are interested in volunteering for this rewarding experience, please click HERE to sign up.
Enjoy your weekend.

LITERACY GRANT
Through the generous support of the "Reaching All Students" grant, several of our educators have actively engaged in professional development opportunities centered around literacy. These lifelong learners have not only seized the opportunity to enhance their own skills but have also become advocates for literacy within our school community. The methodologies backed by the Science of Reading, learned in these professional development sessions are being actively integrated into classroom instruction. This ensures that our students benefit directly from the latest advancements in literacy education.
