Elm class (as told by Elm students)

We are going on a trip to Snow Hill Farm.

We are learning about New York State.

We are now reading fables and talking all about the morals.

We are finally writing the words to our books.

Project Time

Thank you for returning your child's permission slip for our trips out of the New York City area. Thank you also for offering to chaperone on any of these trips. We can still bring along some more family members so just let us know if you want to join us. You can also still contribute to the second grade field trip fund at any time.

This week we prepared to learn more about New York State by thinking back to our study of Brooklyn. Students then wrote about some of the ways we can learn more about New York State.

We also began to create a class map of New York State starting with the place where we live, New York City. We noticed that this area is labeled urban on one of our maps. We described urban places as cities where there are lots of buildings and lots of people.

We will add more urban places to our class map next week and add rural places after our visit to Snow Hill Farm.

We have finished out unit on folktales this week, focusing on the morals or lessons of fables. We also thought about how these morals apply to our lives. We will spend the next month honing out skills as readers as we dive into longer and more complex reading.

Our stories are coming to life now! We are drafting the written words of our stories, using out illustrations and our plot mountains to guide our writing. We are thinking about details such as dialogue and feelings as we write. The story, "Rain Stomper", is giving us inspiration as we decide how to tell out own stories in ways that keep our readers excited.

We will continue to finish our drafts next week . We can't wait to publish and share with you!

We spent time working on problem solving this week in math. Students solved number stories that asked, "How many more?" and shared their strategies. As a class, we compared different ways to solve these problems and notices how different strategies are the same and how they are different.

Next week we will start a new unit based on organizing the t-shirts in the Compass closet! We will be using the t-shirts as a context for working with place value when adding and subtraction.

Students have continued to work together and express their creative ideas in our exploration centers.
