Principal's Message
Dear Adelante Selby Spanish Immersion families,
I hope everyone is well and staying safe. This coming Friday, October 30th, we are happy to be able to continue our tradition of celebrating Halloween with our Trunk or Treat event(see the attached flyer below). A number of our staff and community volunteers will be dressed up in costumes and will decorate the trunks of our cars. Families will drive through and must remain in their cars due to the County Health Department COVID-19 guidelines. All families will receive a pre-packaged bag of treats at the end. This year some of us will be doing a Day of the Dead/ Día de los Muertos theme for Trunk or Treat because we can not have our normal large celebration. As many of you know already, one of our goals is learning about and appreciating cultures and looking at and comparing traditions like Halloween and Día de los Muertos. Here is a great You Tube video from National Geographic about "Día de los Muertos" that you can share with your family. Also, children will enjoy drawing the sugar skulls/calaveras de azucar following directions in this video.
The Redwood City School District (RCSD) Board of Trustees reached consensus for all grade levels (PreK-8) to return to in-person teaching and learning as of Tuesday, January 19, 2021. There will be a staggered return as per County guidelines which means the Preschool -2nd grades would return the week of January 19th and the 3rd-5th grades would return the week of January 25th. Full Distance Learning will also still be an option for families. Schools can return to in-person teaching and learning provided the Four Pillars of the San Mateo County Office of Education’s Pandemic Recovery Framework are implemented and a COVID-19 testing plan for staff is in place. It was also determined that each school's School Site Council will further develop the Reopening of School plan following district parameters according to the particular program needs of each school. This Re-opening of schools plan must be submitted to the District Office by December 7th for approval. Our School Site Council met last week and realized that we need to closely look at the upcoming survey results for both the teachers and our families regarding whether they are willing to return to in-person learning before working on next steps around which schedule option best meets our needs. Currently, the district has suggested four schedule options which must adhere to minimum instructional minutes.

The Stanford Resilience Project has put together this video for parents through The Parent Education Series about raising a resilient distance learner. Students who are resilient thrive by developing a range of intellectual and social-emotional skills and capacities. The Resilient Learner presents a holistic model that describes eight key domains or "columns" to help students succeed - both outside and inside the "virtual" classroom. Recently, Michelle Redmond led a parent workshop for Spanish speaking parents using the same resources but in Spanish here. Another great resource for Spanish speaking parents is Familias Unidas. Familias Unidas virtual classes have already started, but it’s not too late to join the Familias Unidas community! Virtual classes are Thursdays at 6pm where parents learn tools and strategies on how to help your child(ren) achieve success not only during distance learning but beyond. If interested, please call Secundino Zuno at 650-665-0122 or register with this link.
We need all parents help making sure your child(ren) are logging on to the Wednesday Grade Level Meetings with Director Warren, Subdirectora Leslie, and Danny G. These are 30 minute sessions for each grade level and Danny does a wonderful job engaging the students. The teachers put the Wednesday Meeting links in their Google Classroom, CLEVER page, and/or email you the links in Class Dojo. Currently 2nd-5th graders will be using Zoom. For 2nd-5th graders: please remember that students need to first Sign Into Zoom in CLEVER and then click the Zoom meeting link the teacher provides. Here is a quick video from Maestra Jeannette showing her 5th graders how to use Zoom: English and Spanish .The schedule for the required Wednesday Grade Level Meets with Danny G is:
- 5th grade: 8:30am (with Zoom)
- 4th grade: 9:00am (with Zoom)
- 3rd grade: 9:30am (with Zoom)
- 2nd grade:10:00am (with Zoom)
- 1st grade: 10:30 am
- TK/Kinder: 11:00am
A reminder that the district has set up an informational resource for parents and the community on the district web page called the Roadmap to Reopening of Schools. The district has also included a Parent's Guide to Distance Learning and in Spanish: Guía de Aprendizaje a Distancia para Padres to help support families.
it is important that all families please visit the Unidos WebPage and take a few minutes to fill out the Membership Toolkit. Unidos supports a number of important programs at our school as well as coordinating volunteer efforts. They also provide communication to our community on a regular basis and need families updated information in the toolkit to do so.
Student breakfast and lunch drive through pickup here is now on Mondays and Thursdays 11:30-1:30, or at Roosevelt, Henry Ford or Taft from 2:30-4:30 Learn more here
