High Lakes News
December 2016
This Months Highlights!
As we enter into the winter holiday season I am seeing some pretty amazing things from our High Lakes students. As many of you know, kindness is a theme for our school this year. One such example of kindness comes from many of our High Lakes students. Each student earns Lynx Loot for following the school rules of being safe, kind or responsible. They can buy trinkets or “Teacher Time” activities with their Lynx Loot. Another choice for using their loot is to turn it into Community Service Dollars. So far around $2,000 in Lynx Loot has been raised for the community. At this time we are working with a non-profit dog shelter for these donations. Of course we aren’t dealing with real money but Bend Pet Express is donating $750.00 for food to benefit homeless animals because of many of our students’ selfless generosity.
…Christmas Parade
We are fortunate to have the music teacher and volunteers that we do. Each year Sarah Ruzicka organizes approximately 100- 4th and 5th grade choir students and decorating a float for our community Christmas parade. This year the parade is on Saturday, December 3rd at noon. Please support our community by giving them a shout out at this year’s parade.
…portable
The portable will be ready for occupancy sometime this month. Mrs. Suttle’s 3rd grade and Mrs. Jessup’s 5th grade rotation will move there. This will free up the common areas for both red and blue lake so grade levels will be able to meet as a group again. Our technology/science class will go back to the small classroom by red lake.
…Site Council
Applications for Site Council membership are due by December 8th. Please stop by the office for the application if you are interested in serving on Site Council.
…visitors
First, I would like to thank you for your support as we use our new sign-in system. Now that the school year is underway and your children are comfortable getting to and from the classroom we would like to ask that you set up a meeting point outside for afternoon pick-up. Our teachers need those last minutes of the day for classroom instructions and closure with their students. If you would like to meet with your child's teacher please email or call the teacher and a meeting can be set up. If your child forgets something from home, we would be happy to have that item delivered to their classroom. Thanks for supporting our efforts to keep our students and staff safe and the classroom with less interruptions.
…gifts
Many parents like to show their appreciation for their child’s teacher and other staff during the holiday season. Please know that “During a calendar year teachers cannot receive any gift or gifts with an aggregate value in excess of $50.00 from a single source.” This is an Oregon State statute. (www.oregonlaws.org/ors/244.025) The implications of this law are that a teacher can lose their teaching license.
From all of the staff at High Lakes, please have a safe and enjoyable holiday season!
