Croatan Sound
By: Emily Hendrix
Croatan Sound is located in the Outer Banks and is one of the smaller sounds there.
The Croatan Sound is home to cormorants, pelicans, ibises, egrets, and herons. Croatan Sound is also home to ducks and geese. The Croatan Sound is fed by the Albemarle Sound's many smaller streams and estuaries.
Estuaries are threatened by the changes of the land bordering and surrounding the estuaries and by contamination of river and ocean water.
Estuaries are important because of the life and biodiversity there. Estuaries are known as the "nurseries of the sea" because many animals come here to lay their eggs. Estuaries are important because only certain life can live here. Estuaries also control erosion and reduce flooding of the mainland.
