All of our events are FREE and open to the public! You do not have to live in Ely to participate!
Do you have too much candy sitting around in your house and you need it to be gone?!? Not sure what to do with your costumes from this year? Consider donating these items to the library! Costumes will be saved for our annual Halloween costume exchange and candy will be used in our upcoming annual Gingerbread House Event! Drop off your donations anytime. Thank you!
Make Your Own Button! (Drop-in Activity)
Come try out our button maker! We will be making pin-back buttons that are 2.25". You can draw one, or we will have magazine pages to cut out. You can even bring your own photos! Everyone is welcome to make one.
Thursday, November 10th
Great for practicing planning, engineering and math skills, Lego Challenge can't be beat! We will give you a list of ideas to create with our Legos open-play style from 4-6:30 on November 10. If you create something from on the list, we'll display your creations for the rest of the month! Free play with Legos is also welcome. Fun for the whole family!
Girls in STEM Kick Off
Saturday, November 12th
We will be having a pizza lunch, doing a Sweet Kitchen Science experiment making our own ice cream, and hearing from a university student doing a degree in a STEM field!
This event is only for girls grades 4-8 so please sign up participants below.

Charlie Brown Friendsgiving at the Library
Tuesday, November 22
Get ready for your Thanksgiving dinner by learning what Charlie Brown and his friends found for their Friends Thanksgiving dinner. We'll serve a bonafide Charlie Brown Thanksgiving meal while watching this 25-minute cartoon. Afterwards, we'll do a Charlie Brown craft. Fun for the whole family!
Candy Donations Accepted
We are now accepting donations of candy (gum drops, skittles, M&Ms, etc.), cereals (Trix, Cinnamon Toast Crunch) mini marshmallows, coconut, pretzels and other edible items for our Gingerbread House Decorating party in December! For more information, please contact Sarah at 319-848-7616.
Gingerbread Houses! Celebrating 15 Years!
Our annual Gingerbread House kits will be available for pick-up on Saturday, December 3rd from 9am – 12 pm! Basic house structures, frosting and candy will be provided in each kit. Supplies are limited, so register today by calling us at 319-848-7616 or signing up at https://forms.gle/1AnrHA91u8xovrXeA.
One house per family will be provided and registration is required by 5pm on Wednesday, November 30th. This family fun event is sponsored by the Friends of the Ely Public Library.
Adult and Teen Take and Make
Starting Tuesday, November 1st
We are having a mini art show! Participants will recieve a canvas, 3 colors of paint, and a painting utensil. They may use whatever they have at home to complete their project. When you're done, bring it into the library and we will have an art gallery up to display everyone's work!

GeriFit Exercise Classes
Mondays and Wednesdays
We are excited to start providing Geri-Fit again! This is a FREE health and wellness opportunity that will be held on Monday and Wednesday mornings at 8 am. Geri-Fit® classes improve strength, balance and arthritic conditions for people 60 and over. Get FREE BOOKS for your child! Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library mails free high-quality, age-appropriate books to children from birth to age five! The Ely, Iowa, Friends of the Public Library partnership with Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library ensures all children in our community, with a mailing zip code of 52227, can have a great selection of books at home.

Ely Food Pantry
The food pantry that we started for the derecho is continuing to serve the community through a partnership with HACAP. Items are available in the lobby for anyone who needs them. Neighbors Helping Neighbors!
We are accepting the following items:
- Unexpired, non-perishable food items
- No-heat meals
- Peanut butter
- Fruit in squeeze pouches
- Diapers, wipes, formula,
- Feminine hygiene products
- Toiletries, paper towels, and cleaning supplies
We are no longer accepting shoes and clothing.

1000 Books Before Kindergarten
Take a minute to learn more about the library’s 1,000 Books Before Kindergarten Program. Here’s why every child in preschool and younger should join!
1. Children who are read to at an early age become more successful in school.
2. Children’s brains develop most rapidly before the age of 4.
3. Reading together helps develop bonds with parents and caregivers.
4. Listening to stories helps children’s brains grow.
Incentives you’ll receive:
