Fifty years ago he made a heart-touching speech and is now known all over the world. His name is Martin Luther King. He was born in 1929 in the Southern U.S state in Georgia and grew up with racism. He grew up in a time when "black people" where kept apart from "white people". The two races weren't permitted to go to the same schools and sit on the same sides of buses.

In 1950, there were big protests to end rasicm but many were unsuccessful and in 1963, many people where arrested for doing illegal things such as, Rosa Parks, a woman who was also standing against racism, who refused to give up her seat on a bus to a "white person".

So, as the years went on, Martin Luther King gained thousands of supporters and protests to help change racism grew. In 1964 he won a Nobel Peace Prize and and unfortunately died in 1968, from being shot by a gun. James Earl Ray was arrested but many thought that he was innocent, including some of Martin Luther King's family!

Although he died, Martin Luther King's message lived on and now he is known all around the world. While, there is still racist actions taking place, more and more people have come to realise that there is no point in fighting, we should all be treated equally.
