Once Upon a Time
Pre-Reading Activities
Before Reading
-Read the Title
Introduce a book by reading the title and author.
-Picture Walk
Encourage your child to look at all the pages and take time to look at each illustration. The illustrations will provide important clues when your child begins to read the text. Providing a pre-reading opportunity to examine the illustrations minimizes the time spent looking at the pictures when your child is trying to focus on the text.
-Predict
Ask your child to make predictions about events that may occur. (for new books only)
-Connection
Before and after reading, "making a connection" is a great comprehension strategy. For example- before reading a book about bikes, ask your child to tell you about a time they rode their bike. After reading ask your child if this book reminded them about something they have read before, something that happened to them or someone else, etc.
