Mrs. Clark's First Grade
2013-2014
The ballots have been counted. The results are in...
This week, we talked about voting and the election process. Our students were busy registering to vote, casting their own votes on their very own "ballot", and tallying the results of our class election. They even thought and wrote what THEY would do if they were president. I have to say--I do think we definitely may have a few future politicians on our hands!
Our voters filled out their own voter registration cards
Ballot box filled with ballots
It's a landslide!
Sight words/high frequency words!!!!
Did you know that 75% of the words we find in books, magazines, and newspapers are sight words aka high frequency words? It's true! Students who know their sight words without hesitation are faster, more accurate, more fluent readers. The sight words for the week are the words on our spelling list with the asterisk next to them. So far, we've learned about 40 sight words this year! Here is a link to the First Grade high frequency word list. If your child is struggling with his/her sight words, there are lots of fun ways to practice--make flashcards, have them circle the words in the newspaper, make them out of playdough, write them in a tray of salt or sand--anything that gets them writing and reading those words!
Red Ribbon Week
This week is Red Ribbon Week, a drug free and anti bullying campaign recognized by schools across our nation. Each day during the announcements, we will have a brief message about the importance of living a drug free life. We also get the students more involved by having different dress up days and events throughout Red Ribbon Week. Here are the dress up days:
Monday, October 28--I'm a "Jean-i-us" because I'm drug free! (Wear JEANS)
Tuesday, October 29--Put a cap on drugs! (Wear a HAT)
Wednesday, October 30--Team up against drugs! (Wear a jersey or favorite sports team shirt/attire)
Thursday, October 31--You can spot me being drug free! (Wear camouflage or polka dots)
Friday, November 1--One school, one goal: Drug and Bully Free! (Wear your RP t-shirt)
