A few thoughts from Mrs. Singleton & Mrs. Holz
And June is here! We are so proud of the amazing year we've had at Vose this year. Here are just a few of the things we have to celebrate:
- Vose continued to be awarded with the esteemed Premier Oregon Green School, through many efforts of students, staff and parents
- Our STEAM/Green Team night was another fun, educational event for families to learn all about the science, technology, engineering, art and math activities students and teachers have created together...we had over 20 community groups and agencies partner with us as well!
- There were nine Coffees with the Principals, with over 70 parents participating in sharing and learning together
- We had many after school programs to provide a variety of experiences for our students including Unicycle Club, Marathon Running Club, Mallet Club, Choir, Knitting Club, Dance Club and Bey Blade Club with over 200 students participating!
- Our PTO did a fantastic job fundraising, offering over $8000 in grants to teachers, funding field trips for every grade level and planning amazing events like Friendship Dance, Dia del Niño carnival and sponsoring various activities like Unicycle Club, Art Literacy and our Community Run
- Six $1000 scholarships were awarded by our Vose Alumni Scholarship Committee to six amazing former Vose students to help them continue their education as they pursue their dreams!
- Compared to fall scores, 71% more Vose students now read at grade level in English!
(That’s 90 newly proficient readers)
- Compared to fall scores, 126% more Vose students now read at grade level in Spanish!

Summer Slide
Our staff talked with students this week about summer slide. If students are not engaged and reading, writing or math over the summer for at least 2-3 hours a week they will have huge learning loss.
Did you know that kids could lose up to three months of academic progress over the summer? This is called the “summer slide.” Summer slide is when students forget some of what they have learned or slip out of practice of reading during the summer months. Help us continue this growth by signing up for the summer reading programs like the one at the BEAVERTON LIBRARY.
Here are three tips from Scholastic to prevent the summer slide:
Read at least six books during the summer
Read something every day
Keep reading aloud
The Beaverton School District has put together a list of great local summer reading programs to help students prevent “summer slide.”
Other great resources include:
Summer School & Credit Recovery at District comprehensive high schools: (Aloha, Beaverton, Mountainside, Southridge, Sunset, Westview) visit the 2019 Summer Session webpage for information.
Tualatin Hills Park and Recreation District Summer Camps and Classes
Summer Day Camps at the Oregon Zoo
Portland Children’s Museum Summer Camps & Classes
Library Summer Reading Programs:
6 weeks are spent re-learning old material in the fall
Books in the home is most important
Beat summer slide read 2-3 hours a week
As you may know, Summer Reading officially started on Saturday, June 1st. We currently have kids registered for SRP, 10 of those are from Vose! Last year 148 students from Vose registered for summer reading—think we can get more this year? Beaverton Library is going to give a prize to the school with the most improved sign-up rate in 2019!

The Beaverton School District is still enrolling for Kindergarten at all elementary schools for the 2019-2020 school year.
Any child who will be five (5) years of age on or before September 1, 2019 is now eligible to enroll for Kindergarten at their designated home school. Online Registration is available for new student enrollment. After the online application has been submitted families will want to schedule a visit to their child's school, prior to the first day of their attending. This visit is important as they may receive school-specific forms to complete. Parents/guardians will need to provide a birth certificate and immunization record at the time of enrollment.
Each elementary school will offer parents an opportunity to find out more about the kindergarten program at their spring Kindergarten information events. Vose's Kindergarten Orientation & Dual Language Program Information Night will be Thursday, April 18th at 6pm.
If you are uncertain about which elementary school is the home school, families can check any address to see what elementary, middle or high school attendance boundary it is located in using theDistrict Address Locator or call 503-356-4500.
For more information on registering for Kindergarten, including a list of
2019-2020 Kindergarten Orientation Dates, Immunization Requirements and much more, please visit the Kindergarten Information webpage.

Amazon Future Engineers Coding with Kids Summer Camps
Amazon has a new national program called Amazon Future Engineers. It does a lot of work from K through paid college internships. Portland was actually selected for Coding with Kids summer camps, hosted in the main building downtown (1320 SW Broadway Suite 400). This is one part of Amazon Future Engineer for younger students.
And Amazon is providing scholarships for students to attend; these camps are for ages 5-18. Most are half-day (two can be combined into a full day for 9am-4pm camp) but some camps are full day, too.

Updated 2019-2020 Budget, Calendar and Compensation Information
I want to thank the Beaverton community, including our staff, for their careful attention to our budget process and projected shortfall for the 2019-20 school year. I am encouraged by recent news from our legislators that additional funding may be available in future school years to provide the education that we know every Beaverton student needs.
As we have gone through our budget and bargaining processes this spring, we have worked closely with our Beaverton Education Association leadership. They brought us information about obligations in the 2018-2019 contract. At their suggestion, we also have changed the May 13 Budget Committee Meeting to May 22 to provide the District more time to review and revise the Proposed Budget. As we complete our 2019-2020 budget process, we will make a few adjustments:
- The Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) for collaboration time expires on June 30, 2019. Pending negotiations, the District’s intent is to return to the original licensed contract language of 175 student days and 193 licensed employee days for the 2019-2020 school year and eliminate early release Wednesdays. The school year would be five days shorter.
- Teachers and administrators will receive a one-time salary adjustment equal to .5% of their annual pay as part of their June 20 paycheck for the 2018-2019 school year. This cost of living increase (COLA) was required as part of the 2016-2019 licensed and administrator contract based on trigger language agreed to in 2016. The classified contract has different provisions and classified staff are not impacted by this adjustment.
- District staff, including newly appointed Interim CFO Jim Scherzinger, will review and revise the proposed 2019-2020 budget. Revisions to the budget will be presented and discussed at future budget meetings scheduled for May 22 and June 17. The School Board will meet on June 24 to adopt the budget.
- District staff will release an updated school calendar for the 2019-2020 school year that includes 175 student contact days and the elimination of early release/collaboration Wednesdays.
As we revise the proposed 2019-2020 budget, I will be focused on staff and students and my highest priority will be minimizing class size increases.
Thank you for all you do for the students of the Beaverton School District.
