Calling All "Dudes with Drills"!

Calling all of our “Dudes with Drills”!! We are WAAAAYYY behind schedule if we are to have props ready for competition this week…so ALL HANDS ON DECK this week during practices please???

No Parking this Week

HEADS UP! Please do NOT park behind Guard Room this week. (That's the small parking area right next to the Band Hall.) Build Crew will need that space to finish putting vinyl on props! We WILL be in full competition costume and production at this weeks game!!!

Pit Crew/Prop Crew/Front Ensemble Crew Important Update

Competition weekends are approaching! The Pit Crew is so lucky to have so many people signed up to volunteer. We did run into some confusion on pushing props last game night. We had volunteers come and assign themselves to a prop that we had already had assigned to someone who was actually signed up to the “Signup Genius”. We really do appreciate your willingness to help and actually did need the help with some props. At the BOA competitions coming up we can only have the 35 members who have signed up to help push props onto the fields and off. Due to restrictions & possible points taken off the show, only these 35 members will receive a field pass to do so. Pit crew is expected to be at the competitions throughout the whole day to be available to push props when ever needed, and help load trailer at the end of these competitions. With that being said anyone who wanted to sign up but our list was filled, is welcome to come help load trailers, and unload at the competition site. For those who are signed up on any given competition and have something come up that will keep you from helping please reach out to Michelle Flores @ vpsupport@johnsonbands.com, or M.B, & Sylvia @ propcrew@johnsonbands.com. You may also reach out to us using Groupme. This way we can find someone who can fill in for you. Please do not hesitate to reach out if you have any questions!

Thanks!

Sign-Making Party

Thursday, September 22

5 - 7 p.m.

We will have supplies on hand to help everyone make their signs. If you need inspiration or help making signs, please join us on that day!

Competition Day Send-offs

Our first full-band competition is Saturday, September 24, and our first send-off of the season will be that day, too. Send-offs are a tradition at Johnson High School of cheering for the students as the buses pass us on 967. We bring signs, including the infamous "big head" signs, to show our students support as they head to the competition. We stand along the road and enthusiastically cheer as the band passes by, and the students enjoy seeing everyone. The location and time will be given to everyone as soon as we know the departure schedule for the band, so watch social media and the GroupMe texts to know where to be next Saturday.

From the director

Can you say Contest Week! That is exactly what is happening this week. But, before we get to what is coming up, we need to take a second and acknowledge the success of our Jaguar Drum Line from this past Saturday.

Our Jaguar Drum Line and Front Ensemble traveled to Dripping Springs on Saturday to compete in the Thunder In The Hills Drum Line Contest. The Drum Line and Front Ensemble had a great performance and came away tied for 2nd in their division. After the tie breaker the Jaguars finished in 3rd place. In addition to finishing near the top of their division, they also walked away with two best in division awards. Both the Jaguar Drum Line Tenors and Front Ensemble were selected as the Outstanding groups in those captions! Congratulations to all of our percussion students!!

Let’s take a look at this coming week! We have something every day this week! M, T, Th & F rehearsals, Wednesday Parade and Community Pep-Rally, Friday Football Game and Saturday Marching Contest!

Wednesday is the Homecoming Parade and Community Pep-Rally. The Parade will begin downtown and travel to the Buda Park Amphitheater for the Pep-Rally. A detailed schedule will be emailed early this week, in addition to the football and contest schedule. Students will meet at the parade location at 6:15, parade begins at 7:00. Students will be dismissed from the pep rally. Again a detailed schedule will be emailed this week.

Saturday is our first marching contest of the season! The Jaguar Band will travel to San Antonio on Saturday to compete in the Hornet Invitational Marching Contest! This festival is a prelims only festival and will not have a finals performance for competing bands. This means that the students will return in time and those who chose to attend the Homecoming Dance be able to do so.

Let’s have another great week!! As always “It’s A Great Day To Be A Jaguar!”

The Beat--A Weekly Update for Percussion-Specific Information

AND WE ARE OFF!!!! What an incredible start the the season with our performance at the Thunder in the Hills Percussion Invitational! Super proud of the work the students have been putting in to get to this point. We placed 3rd in the Intermediate Large Division and took home best Front Ensemble and Best Tenors caption awards. We received lots of really great feedback from the judges. See the score breakdown here. (Recap.)

Special shout out to ALL of the parents who helped make this event great for our kiddos. We appreciate everything you do!!!

This week is gonna be a busy one! Normal practice schedule as well as the Homecoming parade on Wednesday evening. Front Ensemble members are not required to attend the parade and pep rally but are welcome.

GRADES GRADES GRADES GRADES GRADES GRADES GRADES GRADES GRADES !!!!!!

Please keep up with your student’s grades. We are coming up on progress report 2 and that is the most important one of the year. Students can lose their eligibility if they are not passing ALL of their classes with at least a 70. We can’t afford to lose anyone! PASS THOSE CLASSES!!!!!

COMMUNICATION

Most communication for our band program goes out through Charms and Remind. Any Percussion specific info will be sent out via our Percussion Remind. I encourage all parents to sign up. This will hopefully keep you informed of upcoming percussion events, news, info, etc.

To sign up, simply text @jagsperc22 to the number 81010.

JHS Band Hall

BOA Midland:

Performance time: 4 pm

Please note on the BOA Midland daily schedule that the presentation of awards does not take place until 10:45 pm. Students will still need to 1) hopefully celebrate and take pictures, 2) load buses, and 3) change clothes and settle in for the long drive home. The actual schedule will be released by directors as we get closer to the competition date. However, based on last year’s experience, please know that we do not anticipate returning to JHS until around 5 am.

There is still room on the Fan Bus. If you would like to sign up, please do so here: https://www.johnsonbands.com/product-page/competition-fan-bus-tickets-2022

BOA Waco:

Schedule is not out as of yet but last year the finale wasn’t until 10:45 pm. Again, based on last year’s experience, please know that we do not anticipate returning to JHS until around 1:30 am.

Update on HOUSING requests for BOA Grand Nationals!

The reply I received from our BOA Housing POC regarding our request for additional rooms at the student’s hotel is that he “can likely add these rooms” but he would like to confirm with the hotel and will get back to me early this week. For those of you that submitted via the form or that contacted me directly, please know that I will let you know as soon as I get word!

Here is our DRAFT itinerary for BOA Grand Nationals. Please keep in mind that this itinerary can and will change as needed. Please be flexible, patient, and understanding! The Info Packet will also be updated as we get closer to competition.

Staying Informed

Staying Informed! The Jaguar Band strives to keep everyone informed about our events and increase the opportunity to answer questions and create conversations with our community. This year, you will be able to find out information not only in our Newsletter and on our Band Calendar, but we will also be sharing them on our Johnson Band website events page and as events on our Facebook page. Our events on Facebook will be used as a primary source for updates and reminders. Don't forget to use your section GroupMe's as a quick and effective way to get your questions answered!

Service Hours

The JHS Band Boosters have created a form for band students to track their band volunteer service hours. (Click the previous sentence to link to the form.) This form is similar to what is used by other organizations such as the NHS and puts control of volunteer service hours tracking in the students hands. Students should print and use this to log for all band related volunteer service hours and ensure completion of all fields including supervisor signature. Parents signatures are not accepted. Follow all details on the form to turn in the logs in the spring to be considered for Band Student Service Awards at the Band Banquet or for logging volunteer service for Letterman Jacket points. Any questions, contact banquet@johnsonbands.com or secretary@johnsonbands.com. This form should be used for all hours since the Band Banquet last spring. Multiple forms may be submitted to track all of your volunteer service.
