English Language Arts

Week 7

This Week

This week, we went to the library, received our Lexile reading levels, spent a day on Reading Plus, and wrote the rough draft of our Chicken Soup essay.

Next Week

Next week, we will peer review essays and learn about inferences and theme.

Rough Draft Due Monday!

Students should bring in a copy of their rough draft of their Chicken Soup for the Teen Soul essay on Monday. The assignment is to write a story of something that has happened in their life that was important to them. It should be two pages handwritten (or one page typed). We will peer review the stories on Monday and the final draft (typed) will be due on Friday, 9/23.

Extra Credit Opportunity

Students are invited to earn 15 extra points on their parts of speech quiz by completing an optional assignment.

Directions: Create a comic strip grammar book that illustrates the parts of speech. The book must have a front cover designed from a cartoon or comic strip character. It must also include a table of contents and eight additional pages. Each of the eight pages must have a different part of speech (noun, pronoun, adjective, adverb, verb, interjection, conjunction, and preposition), definition, a comic example with the part of speech highlighted, and an original sentence with the part of speech highlighted. Be sure you book is neat and complete!

QR Code Books

This week, we went to the media center and Mrs. George showed students that we have many books in the library with a QR code on the cover--these books can be downloaded to students' devices free of charge! They can keep the book on their device for as long as they want, and can download as many as they wish (or as many as his/her phone will hold). In order to do this, they need to download a QR Reader app from the app or play store. The app is free and there are several to choose from.

Reading Plus

Beginning next week, students will be assigned 5 Reading Plus See Reader lessons each week. These lessons take 15-20 minutes each and will be the bulk of their ELA homework for the rest of the school year. I will take the average of these 5 scores and it will be keyed in the "independent reading" portion of their grade (10% of final grade). If a student does not have internet access at home, please let me know and we will find a way for them to complete the lessons during homeroom or lunch. In reading Plus, the week begins on Monday at 12:01 AM and ends at 11:59 PM on Sunday night. Students will be given one entire class period each week to complete as many lessons as they can.

Directions for logging in from home:

  1. Go to www.ReadingPlus.com
  2. Click login
  3. Site Code: rpsuttonaps
  4. Students will be asked to enter a username and password. This is their regular APS computer login. If they do not know it, please contact me or have them ask me to write it down for them.
  5. Click the clever link
  6. Click log in with Active Directory
  7. Click the Reading Plus icon
  8. Select the See Reader Reading lessons

I know these instructions look complicated, but students have already completed this in class several times this year.
