HOPE HAPPENS HERE!
Hope Focus: We Believe
The universal truth, We Believe, asserts that children succeed when they are surrounded by adults who believe they can succeed.
Believing is the act of accepting something as true. Often, maybe always, belief comes without proof or evidence. For example, "I believe the sun will set today and rise again tomorrow" is not a true belief because we already know this to be true. The rising and setting of the sun is a scientific fact that we can physically see every day and night. That's knowledge, not belief.
Just because belief isn't backed by a scientific process doesn't make it any less real or powerful in our lives. In fact, research has shown that belief significantly impacts our lives. Our thoughts influence our feelings, and our feelings influence the choices we make. If we believe in something, whatever it is, it causes us to think a certain way, which brings about certain feelings that are then played out in our actions. For example, if someone holds the belief that they cannot achieve something, they might think, "I'm not good enough" or "I don't deserve this." Those thoughts bring about feelings of low self-worth, little confidence, and despair. In turn, that person chooses not to do what they need to do to achieve what they want. Conversely, when a person believes in themselves, they have thoughts that evoke feelings of self-worth, confidence, and hope. These feelings fuel the person with motivation to make choices that will help them achieve what they want.
Another interesting part of belief is that, while it's something that comes from within us, it is also something given to us by others. A child learning to ride their bike doesn't have much confidence in the beginning. The grown-up helping them learn expresses their belief in the child's ability through words of encouragement and by guiding their practice. This builds the child's confidence, which motivates them to keep trying until they get it. Sometimes, we don't realize what we are capable of and it takes the belief of others to help us see it!
Belief is not scientific. It cannot be physically seen, like the sun setting and rising. But, it is very real. It grows strong within us through the love and support of others and every time we learn something new or overcome a challenge. It is belief that keeps hope strong when things get tough.
