Gladstone graduation rate tops state by 5%
The Gladstone School District’s four-year graduation rate for the class of 2021 was 86%. That’s 5% above the state graduation rate.
“I’m proud of my team for their innovation and persistence in finding ways to meet each student’s unique needs,” said Gladstone High School Principal Kevin Taylor. “Summer school programs, online credit recovery, after school credit recovery, fifth year studies, and adult diploma options provide each student with support and a pathway to graduation.”
Gladstone again showed strong performance by some historically underserved groups.
More than 86% of Hispanic/Latino students graduated in four years, beating the state average by over 4%. That’s an improvement of 12% in just four years. One strategy to boost results was hiring a bilingual family liaison to improve communication with Spanish-speaking families.
Nearly 82% of Gladstone’s economically disadvantaged students graduated on time, a rate nearly 5% better than the state average. The district improved the graduation rate for this group by 18.5% in the past seven years through academic and emotional support programs.
In Gladstone, over 78% of students with disabilities graduated on time, almost 7% more than the previous year and 12% above the state average. The district’s strong focus on early intervention strategies helped build this success.
“There has never been a more difficult time to be a student,” said Superintendent Bob Stewart. “We know that some individuals need extra time, academic help, and social-emotional support to graduate, and we remain committed to helping each and every student find a way to get there.”
Staff cover new roles to keep schools open
Three weeks into the omicron surge, Gladstone Schools remain open. Despite many staff absences and few available substitutes,, the district team has pulled together to cover for their absent colleagues.
"Teachers contribute their prep time to keep classes running," said Superintendent Bob Stewart. "Principals are serving lunch, answering phones, or teaching math. And our support staff, counselors, and administrators fill in as teachers, contact tracers, or in uncovered support roles."
At a time when a third of students across Portland have resumed online learning, in Gladstone in-person classes, clubs, and athletic events continue, providing instructional continuity, social connections, and support to students.
Because of this, parents are able to go to work, keeping hospitals, grocery stores, and other essential businesses open.
Stewart added, "We’ve never faced a situation like this. But the way our staff has stepped up to help colleagues and kids is flat out amazing. I've never been more proud of this team."
