STAAR Algebra I EOC: What's With the Overlap?

This face-to-face session will concentrate on the STAAR Algebra I EOC. What will be tested, what could be tested, what will not be tested? All questions will be explored. Teachers will be given an in-depth look at the ways the new math process standards are embedded in the questions and ways to embed them in their instruction. How Mathematics Looks in Today's Classrooms: An Administrator Overview (Online Course in Canvas)
Differentiating in Mathematics for Gifted and Talented (GT), Grades 2-8

Participants will be provided with strategies to differentiate their instruction in mathematics through content, process, and product. Activities appropriate for the gifted learner will be explored. The focus will be on increasing depth and complexity for students to better prepare them for advanced academic success on State of Texas Assessments of Academic Readiness (STAAR). This session is designed to meet the six hours of gifted/talented update credit required annually by the Texas Administrative Code and the Texas State plan for the Education of Gifted/Talented Students for teachers of gifted/talented students. On January 29, 2016 the board approved a process to be used in streamlining the Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills (TEKS). TEA is now accepting applications from individuals interested in serving on the TEKS streamlining committees for science. Additional information and the application are available on the TEA website.
Applications are due to TEA no later than Wednesday, March 16, 2016. Nominations to the TEKS streamlining committees are expected to be announced in spring 2016. Please share this information with anyone you know who may be interested.

Spring 2016 STAAR Administrations
May 2–6: Algebra I
May 9–13:
- Grades 3, 4, 6 and 7 mathematics
- Grades 5 and 8 mathematics retest (May 9th)
- Algebra II (May 11th)
- STAAR assessments for grades 3–8 will NOT have embedded field-test questions this year.
- STAAR EOC assessments will continue to have embedded field-test questions in spring 2016.
- STAAR Standardized Oral Administration is available for students who meet the eligibility requirements in mathematics for Grades 3, 5, 6, and 7.
- SSI promotion requirements apply to students taking STAAR (including STAAR Spanish, STAAR L, and STAAR A) grade 5 or 8 mathematics and/or reading assessments if the students are enrolled in grade 5 or 8 and are receiving on-grade-level instruction in mathematics and/or reading.
- STAAR Algebra I and II assessments will align to the TEKS adopted by the SBOE in April 2012 and implemented in the 2015–2016 school year. Only the “overlap” curriculum will be used for scoring purposes, however, new skills will be addressed in field-test questions.
- TEA will release the following spring 2016 STAAR, STAAR Spanish, STAAR L, and STAAR A assessments in August 2016: Grades 3-8 Math (March version for Grades 5 and 8) and Algebra 1 (May version)
STAAR Algebra II
■ Will be administered on a voluntary basis at the district’s option to ALL students in the district enrolled in the course.
■ Will measure postsecondary readiness.
■ Is not required for high school graduation.
■ Cannot be used for accountability.
■ Cannot be used for the purpose of teacher evaluations.
■ Cannot be used in determining a student’s final course grade or class rank.
■ Cannot be used for college admission purposes.
■ Is offered once per year.
■ Is available both on paper and online.
■ Is available in braille and large print.
■ Can be used to satisfy TSI requirements.

2016 ExxonMobil Bernard Harris Summer Science Camp at UT Arlington
The camp is free a two-week, residential experience for rising 6th, 7th, and 8th grade students (currently in 5th, 6th, and 7th grades) from groups underrepresented in engineering, math and science fields. Eligible campers must be African American, Hispanic, Native American, or qualify for free or reduced lunch. In addition, The Harris Foundation likes for us to select a geographically diverse group, so we can not select more than 1 or 2 students from any one school. Teachers - please identify only your most appropriate candidates.

Texas Wesleyan University will be hosting its 28th Expanding Your Horizons in Math and Science Conference for middle school young women on Saturday April 9, 2016.
Time: 9 a.m.—3 p.m.

NEW | TI-Nspire™ CX technology 4.2 update
Teach CS will provide an overview of the educator competencies required of all teachers to become certified in Grades 8-12 Computer Science. This certification is necessary to teach courses such as Computer Science I, II or III, Fundamentals of Computer Science, or AP Computer Science A. Course instructors will address several competencies in depth and link attendees to additional resources that will help to prepare them to challenge the CS certification test. Attendees should bring their own laptop to the workshop.
Eligible Attendees
Texas teachers interested in becoming certified to teach Grades 8-12 Computer Science are eligible to attend. Attendees should have at least some prior experience in coding or programming to maximize their participation in this workshop.
Accommodations and Transportation
All participants are responsible for their own travel arrangements and payments. These costs will be reimbursed to participants who attend the entire event. Lodging costs will be reimbursed at the state rate only for those who live more than 60 miles from the event. Mileage will be reimbursed, also at the state rate, as calculated by MapQuest using the shortest route option.
No hotel block arrangements have been made by the TRC for this event. Make reservations at an area hotel of your choice, asking for state rate. A copy of the Texas Hotel Occupancy Tax Exempt form is provided and should be printed and turned in to your hotel upon arrival. State hotel tax will not be reimbursed.
