Second Grade News
Week of March 12
Reading/Language Arts
- We are learning how to find books that are Realistic Fiction! This means the events could happen to someone in real life, but the characters are made up.
- We are learning how our culture is unique and important to us and to others around the world. We have been traveling to different countries to read about food and music that is important to them. This week we really focused on Ireland (since St. Patrick's Day is coming up). Ask your child to tell you 3 things they learned about St. Patrick's Day.
- We compared and contrasted the different games, food, music, and celebrations that America has that are the same or different for other countries around the world.
- This week in our guided reading time, we learned the spelling pattern -ar, -or, and -oar. AR like a pirate and OR like a Viking might say while paddling his boat.
Math
- We started a new unit this week on Pictographs. We are learning how to ask questions that can be answered using our graphs, as well as, creating keys that would make our graphs true.
- To help reinforce solving problems with this type of graph, we dressed like chefs and made monster burgers. We spun a spinner to find out what we needed to add to our burgers and then created a Pictograph that supported the information. The challenge was to create a key that stood for 2 or more burger toppings. We figured out that sometimes we have to cut our symbols in half to make the information accurate.
Science/Writing Project
- We are finishing our unit about Earth's surfaces and how earthquakes, volcanoes, and floods can change Earth's surface. We researched volcanoes and created posters about them. Then, we made a model of our volcano, tested a variety of materials to see which ones would make our volcanoes erupt, and then thought of ways to improve our design.
