## Week of February 16, 2016

Thank you to all of you who helped make our Scholastic Book Fair such a huge success! Each student will receive a book courtesy of our PTA. Happy Reading!

We do not have school on on Monday, February 15th in honor of President's Day. We'll see you back in school on Tuesday. Have a great weekend!

## Celebrating Friendship!

A 5th grade student came to read a book to the class about the tradition of celebrating Valentine's Day. This was a perfect fit, as we traded valentines and messages of friendship. I hope you all have a wonderful Valentine's weekend!

## Field Trip Next Week!

Wednesday, February 17th is our class trip to the MN Landscape Arboretum! The bus will leave promptly at 9:20 AM and return to school by 12:45 PM. We will eat lunch upon our return to school. Because we will be missing our regularly scheduled lunchtime, we are asking all students to pack a lunch from home.

## Language Arts

We completed our time lines about the life of Abraham Lincoln. Students were asked to name a character trait to describe him, followed by "proof" for their assessment. Next week we will continue our work with biographies.

Next week students will complete their writing about their collections, so look for your child's collection to come home. We will then turn our attention to writing reviews.

## Mathematics

Our Unit 5 assessment is just around the corner. We have learned most skills and will touch upon a few more next week. Here are the secure skills:

· Compare numbers up to 100 using greater than and less than symbols

· Use place value to count up to 100 using Base 10 Blocks

· Solve doubles facts (with or without using a number grid)

· Solve +0 and +1 addition facts

· Write turn-around-fact for a given number sentence (2+3=5 and 3+2=5)

· Can solve complements of 10 problems using a number sentence (7+?=10, ?+8=10)

· Use ordinal numbers to show least to greatest (1st, 2nd, 3rd, etc)

## Units

This week students "mowed" their alfalfa and grass by trimming it with scissors. They then predicted whether or not they thought it would grow back. Most students predicted the grass would grow back by using their background knowledge. Alfalfa was a bit trickier as there was no background knowledge to use in making a prediction. Time will tell on whether or not their predictions were correct!
