Mrs. Duncan
Miss Williams
Miss Williams is Southwood Academy’s new high school dance teacher. She has been teaching dance for five years, and she has teaching experiences with her home studio in Roswell, GA, Steppin’ Out Dance Studio in Anderson, Southern Dance Studio in Gaffney, and Foothills Dance Conservatory in Seneca. She attended Georgia State University Perimeter College and Liberty University online. Miss Williams loves being at Southwood Academy! She thinks it is a beautiful school, and she enjoys "teaching down the hall from wonderful arts programs being taught to our next generation." She believes "this school is a blessing to the staff and students alike." When not dancing, Miss Williams enjoys spending time with her fiancé, creating art through some other medium, and playing video games.
Ms. Crittendon
Mrs. Pabst
Mrs. Pabst is the substitute teacher for Mrs. Kay’s dance classes until September 14th. Mrs. Pabst has been substituting since January 2021 because she enjoys working with students. She attended Cottey Junior College, a two-year women’s college in Missouri, and then she graduated with her bachelor’s degree. Mrs. Pabst loves Southwood Academy because of the students and because her children attend Southwood Academy, but she especially loves the school since it gives students such an amazing opportunity to focus on their arts areas. Some of her interests and hobbies include spending time with family, hiking, and relaxing at the beach.
Mrs. McCoy
Mr. Jones
Mr. Jones is our new SRO. He describes Southwood Academy as an" academically driven school" and that Southwood "has a great family atmosphere." Mr. Jones attended Clemson University for an online degree in business and spent three years as a police officer but has also served in the military. This is his first year as an SRO. Some of his interests and hobbies include hunting, fishing, visiting the mountains, going to the beach, and spending time with his family and two dogs!

Cafeteria News
1. Breakfast and lunch is not free for all students this year. We encourage all students to apply for free/reduced meals. Applications are available in the cafeteria, or can be completed online using this link. However, even if a student does not qualify for free/reduced meals, they can always eat breakfast and/or lunch. The charge will go onto their account, and the parent/guardian will be required to pay off this charge as soon as possible.
2. Students can purchase meals and extra sales items with cash, checks deposited onto their account, or funds deposited into their account online. Students cannot purchase extra sales if their account balance is negative. To view your child’s balance or make payments on their account, visit this site. You will need your child’s student account number to create an account/log in and view their meal account.
3. For breakfast and lunch, students are required to take at least 3 items, 1 of which must be a fruit or vegetable choice. There are multiple fruit and veggie choices available daily, and students are encouraged to choose as many of them as they wish!
4. For any questions that students have, we encourage them to come ask us! Our staff is here to help with any of our students’ needs.

Congratulations, Mr. Powell!
Southwood Academy is proud to have Mr. Powell, the District Teacher of the Year! After teaching for 19 years, Mr. Powell thought it was “quite unbelievable” to find out he was chosen for the award. Each school in the district selected a teacher to represent their school last spring, and Mr. Powell was awarded this fall. Mr. Powell is now running for State Teacher of the Year and his new responsibilities include representing our district in things such as the Anderson County school calendar meetings. Some of his goals include making a positive impact, encouraging fellow educators, and continuing in his leadership of arts education at the state level.

Dance Audition Opportunity
Strings News
Last school year, the Southwood Academy strings class submitted videos of their performances for the National Orchestra Festival. Over the summer the strings class’s audition was accepted allowing the class to go to the National Orchestra Festival in Orlando, Florida this spring. The competition will be similar to a Concert Performance Assessment, but it will be on a national level with professional orchestra directors known throughout the United States as judges. The competition has three levels: middle school, high school, and community level orchestras. The 7th and 8th grade strings classes will be in Orlando from March 15th-19th. Strings students will visit Universal the two days the class is not performing. This is a great opportunity for Southwood Academy students to achieve national recognition.
