CLASS PLACEMENT REQUEST for SY 2022-23
May 3, 2022
Dear Panther Cub Parents,
As I do at the end of each school year, I am writing to invite you to provide input into the type of classroom your child is placed next year. If you would like to do so, please send me an email that describes:
- your child’s learning style,
- the type of classroom where you think your child will be most successful, and
- the type of teaching style most suitable for your child
Since you are the person who knows your child best, it is helpful for us to know from your perspective if your child needs a very structured environment or a teacher with a higher tolerance for movement and/or noise. If your child is shy, outgoing, anxious, or struggling in a subject – that is information that is important to us also as we work to make the best grouping possible.
When we place children into classes, we examine their achievement, ability, and temperament, and then we work to make the best fit with an upcoming teacher. We consider the current teacher’s success with a child, and I review the parent’s input.
We will not honor requests for specific teachers by name, even if you have some experience with a teacher through an older sibling or a friend’s child. Each child is different, and each teacher/student relationship is different. Further, there is always the possibility that teachers will change positions or grade levels before we return to school. It is more helpful for you to focus on your child than the specific teacher.
We try to put all students in a class with at least one friend with whom they work well. We cannot place friends together just because they are friends. Sometimes that creates unforeseen challenges as students’ relationships change throughout the year. We do need to know however, if there are circumstances between your child and another that might result in a conflict should they end up in the same classroom.
Many hours and many discussions are put into creating well-balanced homerooms for the upcoming school year. I share that responsibility with all the teachers, administrators, and the school counselors since these are often people who know your child well, but I do make the final decisions.
I will accept emails requesting types of teachers and sharing characteristics about your child up until the close of business on Friday, May 27, 2022. We will not be able to consider parent input after that date. This is your only chance to provide input into your child’s placement for next year. Once the school year begins, we will not switch classes. Please email your requests directly to me at johnsdb@pwcs.edu. I will keep any information you share confidential. Thank you in advance for your input! Please let me know if you have any questions.
Sincerely,
Danna B. Johnson, Principal
