Woah! Calm Down Kansas
Sad story during the 1850s
How It Began
Settlers in Kansas were mostly peaceful farmers, but the others were people who moved to Kansas to oppose the decision on weather or not it should be a free or slave state. People from both the north and south came to Kansas to "help" make the choice but it ended with the north and south fighting with Kansas settlers stuck in the middle
Here they come!
Settlers from the north and south heard the news about Kansas and came down as fast as they could. They wasted no time fighting for who would get to claim Kansas as one of the free states or slave states.
Preech it
Stephen Douglas did not agree towards the violence that was occuring in Kansas. He didn't think fighting was the best answer to Kansas's problems they were having. He wanted to decided what kind of state it would be with conference and words.
How Dare He!
Charles Sumner had claimed that Stephen Douglas had plotted with the Southerners about making Kansas a slave state. It had outraged Sumner because he was already angry about the violence taking place. His actions ended up with Butlers nephew, Preston Brooks, beating Douglas with his cane that evenutally broke in two.
Authors feelings towards these current events
I think this is insane that these people from the north and the south hurry down so quickly to help decide the decision and end up getting in a huge fight while the people of Kansas get stuck in the middle. It's like two parents fighting in the middle of the kid. The little kid just kinds of stands there dazed while the parents argue and tell.
