Mrs. Morehead's Weekly News
April 8th, 2016
Welcome Back!
I hope you had a wonderful spring break! It's great to have the students back, and kick off our last quarter of fifth grade together!
MAP Testing Begins...
in three weeks! We will begin testing the week of April 25th in Science. The following week will be testing in ELA, and the last week is in Math. Please make sure your child brings their computer to school, completely charged, each day. There are also listening portions on the ELA assessment, so headphones are required. I have a set of 10 headphones if your child needs to borrow them, but this is all I have.
I would like to offer the students small snacks/treats on each day of testing, so I've created a sign-up if you would like to donate items for one of our testing days. Click the link below to take you to the sign up page. We have 25 students, and the snacks can range from fruit snacks to goldfish to whatever you're thinking! Please let me know if you have questions!
May 19th-Field Trip
Our class will be joining the other fifth grade classes at Hillcrest on Thursday, May 19th for a field trip to the Kemper Outdoor Education Center and participating in the X-Stream Green program. There is no charge for the students, we are able to cover it from funds raised this year. We will be looking for a few chaperones, so let me know if you're interested!
What are we learning?
In ELA, we are beginning our opinion pieces about chocolate milk. Students are researching articles to argue whether or not chocolate milk should be sold in the cafeteria at lunch. In math, students are learning about dividing fractions. In science, we are learning about the solar system. Since MAP testing will begin in about three weeks, we are also spending time reviewing concepts taught since the beginning of the year in all subjects.
Personal Announcement
Before spring break, I announced to the students that this will be my last year teaching for a little while. I have decided to stay home with my children. I have loved every part of Hillcrest STEAM Academy, and I know this is a wonderful place to educate our students. It will be hard to leave, but I know this is the right decision for me and my family. Thank you for all of your support for our students this year!
