Lilian Sarlos
A Message from Principal Sarlos
As you know, this week has been National Classified Appreciation Week, and a great opportunity to say thank you to our team of assistants, secretaries, kitchen staff, engineers/custodians!
We have an awesome classified team here at Palisades, and their work is an essential part of what we do. We are so excited to have the blessing of several bilingual classified staff as well to add to the immersion experience for our students. There is no way that we could manage without them!
Thanks to our generous PTA, and families for providing treats and flowers this week we will also continue to celebrate their contributions to our community again in May during Teacher Appreciation Week.
We have been emphasizing the trait of Honesty this month!
Please keep in mind that all families will make different decisions about masking next week, the clock changes on Sunday, and spring energies will be impacting our children. My children had pre-school teachers who always reminded us to look to nature and see the impact this season has on plants and animals and then remember that it has the same impact on children. Energies are just rising. So, it is up to us adults too, within reason, to stick to routines and schedules and model calm and kindness with our little ones so that they can do their best to be calm and kind as well.
We thank you for your ongoing partnership and hard work as we educate our future leaders.
Warmly,
Lilian Sarlos

5 Ways to Prep Your Kids for Daylight Saving Time
The "spring forward/fall back" switch messes up everyone's schedule! Here's how to get your little one on track so you can all get a good night's sleep.
Take Baby Steps
To help adjust, Dr. Lewin suggests gradually shifting your kid's bedtime in preparation for daylight saving time. So if your child goes to bed at 8 p.m., about four days before the time change, put them to bed at 7:45 p.m., then 7:30 p.m., and so on until they're going to bed as close to 7 p.m. as possible. If possible, wake them up a little earlier, as well.
Control the Lights
To help, Dr. Lewin recommends dimming the lights in your child's bedroom and turning off all electronics about 30 minutes to an hour before bedtime.
Stick to a Routine
When daylight saving time begins or ends, it's especially important to stick with a bedtime routine, as your child is now dealing with a change in schedule that might throw them off.
Get Enough Sleep Now
Also, in the days before you change your clocks, make sure your child is getting plenty of shut-eye.
Be Sympathetic
"The time change can cause such short-term changes in your child's mood, but your understanding and support will help him or her adjust a little better," Dr. Lewin says.

LOSD Mask Policy Update
Dear LOSD Community,
Lake Oswego School District is lifting face covering requirements in our school settings, including indoor school buildings and buses, effective Saturday, March 12. This decision was made in accordance with state guidance and informed by feedback from our students, teachers, staff, and parents/guardians.
Masks will be optional in LOSD. That means our learning community will support those who opt to continue wearing face coverings, as well as those who choose not to wear face coverings, for whatever reason. When community transmission is high, per CDC metrics, face coverings will be recommended. Our community transmission is currently low (green).
To review the guidance, metrics, input and continued mitigation measures informing the district’s decision, please see the presentation posted on the district website under LOSD COVID-19 Information. Also, click here to watch a recording of the presentation and discussion at the School Board meeting. The video is under School Board/Meetings/Available Archives, Meeting March 7, agenda item 5.3.
A short video explaining what the change in face covering requirements means for our learning community will be shown to all students in class this week. Please click here to watch the video and discuss your household’s plans with your student. We will be updating signage in our facilities and materials on our website to reflect the changes.
Thank you for your support and consideration of each other as we take this step in our pandemic journey.
Sincerely,
Dr. Jennifer Schiele
Youth Truth Surveys
Youth Truth Surveys
As part of LOSD’s efforts to create a culture of belonging and to achieve equitable academic outcomes, we will once again administer the Youth Truth survey to all staff, parents, and students in grades 3-12. The Family Survey link is ytsurvey.org/losdfamily22, and it will be accessible beginning Monday, February 28. The YouthTruth survey is confidential, and responses from children and parents will be held in the strictest confidence. We encourage everyone to participate. This will be an important piece of information for administrators to improve our students' experiences at school.
Elementary students in grades 3-5 will also complete the survey between February 28 and March 25. This is a vital opportunity for students to provide feedback and help guide the school’s improvement plan. The survey will take 15-30 minutes to complete and will be offered during school hours.
*Please note that parents may opt their child out of the survey if they would like. Click here for the opt-out form.
