HES List Server Message
December 21, 2017
Hello Holland Elementary Families,
Each day, the staff at HES hopes to provide a fun day of learning for each child. This seemed to happen in significant fashion each day this week. The children are so excited about the holiday season, and they were able to be engaged in so many wonderful learning opportunities related to the holidays. We also had our Cozy Day today, and the students loved wearing their pajamas to school.
On Friday, we have our classroom holiday parties at 2:45, and I know that there is a lot of excitement for these events. If you're helping out at your child's party and want to sign out another one of your children, please be sure to let the office staff know about this when you receive your visitor badge upon entering the school. We'll make a list of students to call down to the office for dismissal, and hopefully this will alleviate any challenges at the end of a what will likely be a very busy day at school. Thank you.
A few other items:
Our 15-Day Kindness Challenge just ended on Monday, and we literally had thousands of acts of kindness documented in the student journals. The staff and I were not concerned with the quantity, though. We felt that this challenge provided a great opportunity for the students to think about how they treat others and reinforce the respect that they provide to others. Parents can reinforce this at home by asking the following questions to their child: What were some of the acts of kindness in your journal? How did this make you feel? How did it impact the other person?
I would like to extend a big thank you to all of our families that donated items to the Toys for Tots Drive. The generosity was touching and overwhelming. It is wonderful to know many children will be able to share in the magic of this holiday season because of these contributions. Thank you!
Out Mitten Tree activity produced a so much more than expected. Despite finding addition ways to hang donated items, we still had to store some hats, gloves, and mittens in a boxes due to the huge response for donations from families. We have some much that we're able to donate to the community, and we thank you for your generosity.
The school office will be open during the break on Wednesday, December 27th and Thursday, December 28th.
School resumes on Tuesday, January 2, 2018.
Wishes for a happy and safe holiday season!

Hour of Code
Students in grades 2-6 have spent the last two weeks coding using the Hour of Code program. They are learning a great deal, and it is wonderful to see what a collaborative learning experience this is for the students. They are eager to share with one another as they learn how to navigate through the coding.
Hour of Code is a web-based program that students can use anywhere. As long as they can access the Internet, they can access Code.org.
For students to utilize the site they should:
- Go to the HES Library Webpage.
- Click on the Hour of Code link.
- Click on their teacher’s name.
- Click on their own name.
- Enter their password. Students in grades 3-6 have a randomly generated two-word password. Students in second grade have a picture. All passwords were randomly generated by Code.org.
All students received their password in Library. If you would like your child to work on the Hour of Code program from home and he/she cannot remember the password please e-mail hadams@crsd.org and Mrs. Adams will help you.
The Great Toy Room Cleanout
Currently at HES, more than ever, we are striving to incorporate STEM activities across the curriculum. We are looking for ways to help children to design, create, and explore. Holland Elementary would like some of your old toys: Legos, Lincoln Logs, Magna Tiles, K’nex Kits, Castle Logix, building blocks, and anything else low tech or no tech.
We are not asking for entire sets - just a handful of extras you have to spare. If each student would provide a small amount it would add up to ample opportunities to enhance our students’ learning. Donated items will be sorted into bins and housed in our school’s science lab for teachers to use with their classes. Thanks so much for helping us with this project!
No Pretzel Sale on Friday, December 22nd

Winter Break Art Exhibits
Ms. AuBuchon encourages families to take advantage of winter break time and go visit one of the many art museums in the Philadelphia/New York city area. Much of what our students learn in the art room can be viewed "up-close and personal" at these museums!
A list of what's on exhibit can be found on Ms. AuBuchon's Art web site. Check for the Exhibit Information page as well as Exhibits at Area Museums 2017-18 page. Especially go see the Terracotta Warrior Statues at the Franklin Institute before they leave March 4th - truly a once-in-a- lifetime opportunity!
Council Rock’s 7th Annual You Be the Chemist Challenge
The You Be The Chemist (YBTC) Challenge® is a fun and innovative academic competition associated with the Chemical Education Foundation and Dow Chemical. The YBTC Challenge® is an interactive event in which fifth through eighth grade students work with teachers, peers and Science National Honor Society students to learn about important chemistry concepts, scientific discoveries, and laboratory safety. This program also educates students about the value of science education and the role of chemistry in their everyday lives. We can’t wait to see what this year’s participants accomplish! A special thanks to Dow Chemical and CREF for sponsoring this annual event. Please click here if you are interested in learning more. If you have any questions please email Tduke@crsd.org

As a parent, I know the importance of enjoying this time with my children. When my oldest was just a baby (and I was so exhausted from sleep deprivation), people would tell me to enjoy the moment because it goes by so quickly. I thought that these individuals were crazy, but they were absolutely right. Treasure this time as a parent!
The staff and I at HES wish you and your family a joyous holiday season, and we hope that each of you enjoys a safe and happy Winter Break with your children!
