The Fairview Connection
JANUARY 20, 2023
MESSAGE FROM PRINCIPAL OPHUS
Dear Fairview Families,
We’ve had a productive week at Fairview. Students gave their best effort this week on both the reading and math MAP assessments on Tuesday and Wednesday. We were also quite thankful to be able to enjoy another mild winter week! We have a lot coming up at Fairview in the coming weeks. Please take a moment to read through my updates below as well as the remaining updates throughout today’s newsletter. Some of these items below are repeated from last week for your reference as they are still relevant and time sensitive in nature. Thank you for reading and have a wonderful weekend!
Sincerely,
Dan Ophus
Fairview Principal
Falcons Read! in January: As we continue our year long Falcons Read! program, in January, students are encouraged to complete the Hot Chocolate Reading Challenge! Packets went home with students last Friday with more information, but it is also linked here for your reference. If students complete the challenge, they can return their mug and have it posted in Fairview’s display case!
Officer Friendly 4th Grade Visits: Between January 23rd and January 27th, Officer Friendly will visit with our 4th grade students to talk about Operation Lifesaver. This is a 45 minute program where children learn to play at a safe distance away from railroad tracks, how to follow railroad warning signs and that railroad tracks and train equipment are private property. With the railroad tracks that run through our town, we hope these presentations will help our students navigate them safely for years to come.
PTO Sponsored Author Visit with Kate Hannigan: Coming up this month on January 31st, author Kate Hannigan will be coming to Fairview to visit with students in the LRC to talk more about her life as a writer and inspire our students in their own pursuits as writers. If you are interested in purchasing a book for your child that Kate will sign and have delivered to Fairview, click this link and follow the instructions provided. Orders are due by Thursday, January 26th.
PTO Science Fair: Our annual Science Fair is coming up on February 22nd from 6:00-7:30 pm. This is such an exciting and meaningful event for our students and we hope your child decides to participate. Participation is optional, and if you would like your child to participate, please review this informational flier and sign up by January 30th using this link.
Kindergarten Registration: Kindergarten enrollment for the 2023/2024 school year is officially open at Westbrook School for Young Learners. Visit this link for information about the pre-enrollment process, residency verification, and registration.
Please contact Jessica Talbot (jtalbot@d57.org) or Cindy Buell (cbuell@d57.org) if you need assistance with language translation of any of the flyers that appear in the newsletter.

IMPORTANT REMINDER FROM NURSE BRUNNING
In order to prevent the spread of germs, it is important that any student who vomits, has diarrhea, or has a fever be kept home for at least 24 hour after the symptoms end. They must be 24 hours free of these symptoms without the use of medication to relieve the symptom. If you have any questions about this please feel free to contact Kelly Brunning.

DRESS FOR OUTDOOR RECESS
As the weather turns cooler, please make sure your children are dressed to go out for recess. Unless it is raining or the temperature /wind chill is too cold (15 degrees or below, real-feel temperature) the students will go out every day for recess. Please write your student’s last name on a tag in their coat and snowpants.
All students will go out with their class unless we have a doctor’s note limiting their participation. If a student has been ill and he/she is not feeling well enough to participate in all the activities of the school day, perhaps another day at home will insure a healthy return to school.
DID YOUR STUDENT'S END OF DAY TRAVEL PLANS CHANGE AT THE LAST MINUTE?
Westbrook Kindergarten Enrollment for 2023-2024
Registering your child for kindergarten includes the following three steps:
Step 1. Online Pre-Enrollment
All families are required to click on the enrollment link (the enrollment link will be accessible beginning January 9, 2023) to provide information online and to schedule an in-person residency verification appointment (Step 2). Step 1 must be completed before moving to Step 2.

- Two different current utility bills for two consecutive recent months (This is a total of 4 bills)
Please sign up for an appointment time using this link. (this link is also accessible January 9, 2023)
Step 3. Online Registration
