Principal's Message
Running of the Bulls
Last Friday, we had a short assembly to talk with students about The Running of the Bulls! This family-friendly event is intended to bring our school community together for a morning of fun and wellness. I challenge the school to have 300 students sign up for the event. The participants in the grade with the highest percentage of participation will receive a prize and depending on the amount of students, the prize will vary.
Currently, we are about 4% of the way toward the goal. We need your participation. Whether you walk or run this is a great opportunity to connect with your school community. Sign up at the link below. Students who sign up will get
Parent Engagement
If you didn't take the survey last week, it is open for one more week.
In the hope of engaging with more parents, I am looking to establish a Parent Advisory Council and start a Parent Book Club. When I've tried things like this in the past, I've had a tepid response. This survey is a way to share, anonymously, your interest, as well as, times and locations that would be most conducive for to your participation.
Please take a few minutes to submit a response to this survey:

Junior High Students Attending High School Events
Oswego and Oswego East wish to continue inviting junior high and elementary students to attend our events, including home football games. However, due to the continued growth in both the success of our teams and the growing sizes of the crowds that are attending our games, we need to become more strict in supervision of events. Therefore I am sending this reminder to be shared with all students that would attend high school athletic events:
- No junior high or elementary student is allowed into a high school event unless they are accompanied by their parent or by a sibling that attends that particular high school. The parent and/or sibling is expected to stay for the duration of time the junior high or elementary student is in attendance.
- Junior high or elementary students must have their school ID (current year) and pay the $2 admission fee.
- There is no re-entry allowed once a student has left the venue.
- Students are expected to be respectful to all in attendance and to follow directions and instructions given by game personnel and administration.
- There are no balls, scooters, skateboards, etc. allowed inside the stadium. These items will be confiscated and will not be returned.
- Any student that becomes a discipline problem or is involved in any discipline issue at the event will be asked to give their school ID to game administration and will be removed from the stadium. Information will be shared with the students home school and the student may be placed on a social suspension list and not allowed to return to any other high school event for the remainder of the year.
Our goal is to share our atmosphere, pride, and success with our entire community, however we must maintain an orderly and safe situation at all our events.

PTO
The Murphy PTO does not do any fundraising as a PTO. Instead we ask families to make an annual donation to the PTO. These donations help us to provide classroom grants, student events, staff appreciation, community awareness and much more. Please consider making a donation. In addition, any family who donates $25 or more will receive one free ticket to the Murphy Monster Mash!
The PTO can accept credit card payments for annual donations. You can also make your family’s annual donation via SignUp Genius by clicking on this link: https://www.signupgenius.com/go/20f0445aaaa22ab9-20192020 UPDATED LINK. If you prefer to send your donation in with your student, please print out the form below and send it to school with your student.

Every Student. Every Day
Student are building and researching instruments as part of our world instruments unit!
Ms. Waldron - Students are doing a cloze read where they have marked the text the first time for unknown words and worked together to find a meaning. Then they will read it a second time marking the text for things they are thinking or questioning. Once they are done we have a whole group discussion to share our thinking and why we might think that.
Ms. Walsh - Mrs. Walsh's 6th graders are working in collaborative groups in ELA led by 8th grade students. All students read the short story, "My Superpowers," by Dan Greenburg and were discussing aspects of the text.
Ms. Cindy Miller - Students took Cornell Notes and then created questions using Costa level of inquiry. After that they shared their questions with each other and determined what made them a level 2 or 3 question. Students wrote a summary at the end of the lesson.
Ms. Waldron - the students have the poem The Road Not Taken read to them. They then write “I wonder” statements or questions about the poem. They then get in a self selected group where they share their “I wonder” or question. The group discusses every persons to gain clarity. The students then return to their desk and respond to their thoughts after discussing. The students reread the poem and do a final response to things they understand now and write questions about things they still unclear on. Used graphic organizer

High School Credit Opt-Out
If you have a student enrolled in Algebra I, Pre-AP English 1, or Spanish I and would like to opt-out of receiving high school credit for the course or wish to drop the course, please click the “Opt-Out Letter” link below for further information. Opt-out forms must be completed and returned to your student’s counselor by October 18.
Student Services 6th Grade Introduction
This week counselors went into sixth grade social studies classes to speak with students about Murphy’s Student Services; we discussed who we are, what we do, and where/when to find us. The presentation can be viewed here: Student Services Intro.
Student Absences
If your student is absent, please feel free to email teachers directly for missed homework. Counselors are willing to help facilitate homework collection; however, emailing teachers is often more expeditious. To find your child’s teachers, please use the staff list here: Teacher Directory.
Binder Assistance Program
BAP is a program designed to assist students in the organization of their Murphy Binders. Student binders are checked in advisory on Thursdays. If a student needs assistance in organizing their binder, they will have an opportunity to do so on Friday during their lunch period. BAP helps reinforce the importance of the organizational skills we are focusing on school-wide and provides an opportunity for students to correct their binder the following day.
ZAP is an intervention implemented to develop good homework habits. This program helps students self-correct without a penalty. Getting into the habit of doing homework and realizing that it counts is tough for many students. ZAP helps reinforce the importance of homework completion and provides an opportunity for intrinsic growth through self-correction.
What to do when your student is ZAPPED?
If a student does not complete a homework assignment he/she will receive a ZAP. Students have until 8:00am, the following morning, to turn the assignment into Student Services for full credit. If the student chooses not to complete or submit the assignment, then the student will be required to attend the ZAP classroom (D126) during his/her lunch to complete the homework, also for full credit. It is your student's responsibility to know what is missing and bring the necessary materials home. Students will be allowed 5 visits (every 9 weeks) to the ZAP classroom to complete their work. After 5 visits, students are no longer eligible for the ZAP intervention.
If you have questions, please contact your child’s teacher and/or counselor.
The Maverick Way Outside of School
Murphy Junior High students are doing amazing things in the classroom as well as demonstrating “The Maverick Way” outside of school. If any student is demonstrating “The Maverick Way” outside of school we want to know about it! Please contact Brian Falli at bfalli@sd308.org or Brandi Zawacki at bzawacki@sd308.org.

Mav Makers Club is an extra-curricular activity dedicated to promoting visual art at Murphy
Junior High School. It is offered to all students in the 6th, 7th, and 8th grade classes and
meets throughout the entire year. Students who attend the club will experience the many
forms and techniques of art. During club meetings, student artists will have an opportunity
to use the art room to work on independent projects made using personal materials as well
as materials purchased using the club fees. It is also a great opportunity to meet other
students who share an appreciation for the arts. Makers Club will serve as a place to
discuss, create, and critique art in all of its forms.
