Teachers Needed for Literacy Resource-English 9-11 Selection Committee (Nominations Due By THIS FRIDAY APRIL 28th)
Resource Selection Committee Nominations
Our Master Agreement provides CEA members input into vital classroom decisions. Section 504.01 details the agreed-upon framework for one of these, textbook selection. When it is time to review textbooks in a particular subject area, teachers from those subjects participate. The District will be selecting a Literacy Intervention Resource for Grades 9-11 that addresses literacy skills in English courses as well as the literacy standards in social studies and science. The resource will be used in College/Career Ready Literacy Courses and for additional Tier 2/Tier 3 literacy instruction for students in grades 9-11 reading/writing below grade level. Bargaining members are needed for the resource committee due to the Request for Proposal (RFP) process. Here’s how the process works:
- CCS posts a notice asking for textbook-adoption committee participants.
- Only teachers from each pertinent subject area and grade level at schools involved elect the nominees.
- Each of the building nominee elections is conducted by its principal and Association Building Council (ABC).
- Nominations should be emailed to CEA President John Coneglio (coneglioj@ceaohio.org), Brian Morton (bmorton6466@columbus.k12.oh.us), and Sonja Dill (sdill@columbus.k12.oh.us) no later than Friday, April 28, 4:30 p.m.
- Nominations should be on school letterhead signed by both the building Principal and Senior Faculty Representative.
- Nominees go to a joint Association and Board committee for a final vote.
PROPOSED VIRTUAL COMMITTEE MEETING DATES: JUNE 8, 15, 22, AND JULY 13.

Answer the NCTE Question: How Do You Teach and Create Poetry?
How do you engage in National Poetry Month?
April is National Poetry Month! Whether you’re a writer or teaching a unit in your class, poetry is for everyone. NCTE wants to know: how do you teach and create poetry, as an individual or within your classroom? How do you, as a poet, produce poetry? What kind of activities do you plan for your students? Are your students creating any poetry during the month? Do you have any tried-and-true resources you use to teach poetry? If you can answer any of those questions, they want to hear from you! Share the incredible ways you and your students engage with National Poetry Month for a chance to be featured in our future communications. Let’s showcase poetry throughout April and beyond! Submission deadline: April 14.

What is Poetry? Poetics, Language, and Feeling (Cost is $315.)
Mondays, 6:30-9:30pm, April 10 — May 01, 2023, 4 weeks
In this course, an introduction to Poetry and Poetics, we’ll develop our own languages for thinking and feeling with poetry. We’ll examine the formal characteristics of poetry, different poetical modes and devices—from epic to lyric to free verse—and the reception and uses of poetry across time and space, paying particular attention to our contemporary moment. What is (and was) the relationship between poetry and politics, or for that matter, social life? How does poetry move us beyond the scope of Cartesian thought and closer to human experience? Readings will be drawn primarily, though not exclusively, from the twentieth and twenty-first centuries, and may include poetry and essays from Percy Bysshe Shelley, William Blake, Aimé Césaire, Audre Lorde, Lyn Hejinian, Myung Mi Kim, Charles Bernstein, Adrienne Rich, Douglas Kearney, and Simone White, among others.

Secondary Literacy Plan
- The CCS Secondary Literacy Plan provides teaching strategies/PD (how to teach) that can be used with the texts/lessons from your adopted resources (what to teach) to address these components of the plan: Academic Language, Reading Comprehension, Writing Competency, and Classroom Discussion. It is rooted in Ohio’s Plan to Raise Literacy Achievement and guided by the Adolescent Simple View of Reading. The plan spans from intermediate literacy that crosses curricular areas to disciplinary literacy that reflects the demands of specific disciplines while allowing for individualized intensive interventions, as needed. Inherent in the plan is that students are reading, writing, and discussing every day in classrooms.
