Jesmond Public School
Jesmond Journal Term 2 Week 2, 2nd May 2023
Principal's Message
New Build
Last Friday, I met with School Infrastructure, and they proposed that the new Administration Building will be completed in approximately 5 weeks. Please see the photos below. Exciting news!!!
Staff Development Day
All staff engaged in our Aboriginal Education Staff Development Day. Our focus was on exploring strong connections to embed Aboriginal persepectives in all key learning areas. The staff had a great day of learning and developed knowledge of shared histories and culture.
Student Attendance
Every student needs to be at school when they are well. Regular attendance leads to improved learning outcomes and a sense of belonging.
Following are Jesmond Public School procedures for staff if a student is absent:
Classroom teachers are required to follow up on attendance if a student is away for two consecutive days.
This is to:
a) Follow up on the reason for attendance if an SMS or phone call has not been received, and;
b) Check-in to see how the student is, if there is anything that can be done to support their return to school.
If you have any questions please contact your class teacher.
School Anzac Service
On Friday 28th April, the whole school attended our Anzac Commemorative Service. We welcomed our official party with special guests Navy Veteran Mr Peter Morris, Army Veteran Mr Mohammad Sabiry and P&C representative Ms Melody Coutman. We were honoured to listen to Mr Morris and Mr Sabiry speak about their time and experience serving our country during the war.
Special guests, staff and students paid respect to all those who made sacrifices for Australia during conflicts, wars and peacekeeping operations. Wreaths were laid to acknowledge the more than 1.5 million service men and women who served our country.
Thank you to our community for coming along to this special event.
2023 Year 6 T-shirts
Year 6 students have voted on and finalised the design. Students were given an order form to take home last week to purchase a shirt.
T-shirts cost $35 each and orders are due by this Friday 5th May. Payment can be made online or in person at the office.
If you are unsure what size your child needs, please contact Ms Robertson and try on some sample sizes.
Assistant Principal, Curriculum & Instruction Update
This term K-2 staff are continuing to implement the new K-2 curriculum. Staff are receiving professional learning and using departmental resources to support their teaching and learning programs. All staff have begun to undertake professional learning to build their understanding around the new 3-6 curriculum and its current available resources.
As part of the APC&I role, Stage 1 staff will receive mentoring, in class support and team-teaching opportunities. The areas of focus for support will be around the writing process and numeracy. Curriculum reform days later in the term will also provide staff more opportunities to engage with and build their knowledge around the new syllabus documents and available resources.
Impact meetings will continue this term. Executive, specialised staff and classroom teachers discuss individual goals for all students in the school for reading, writing and numeracy. Individualised strategies are discussed, and an action plan put in place to support students achieve their goals. All staff have a shared responsibility in supporting students to achieve their goals.
PSSA Zone Cross Country
On Friday, our PSSA Zone Cross Country team travelled to Stevenson Park at Mayfield. All students participated enthusiastically and kept running all the way to the finish line. The students who participated last year all improved on their finishing positions which was amazing to watch. Our students demonstrated fantastic sportsmanship, encouraged each other and represented Jesmond Public School with pride. Well done to everyone.
Star Struck
Congratulations to our Star Struck dancers who successfully auditioned to perform in the 2023 spectacular - 'Ignite'.
Star Struck is on at the Newcastle Entertainment Centre on the 16th and 17th June 2023. Our students will perform in 2 shows as part of Cast B.
Students are preparing for a busy term learning our dance, both at school and with other schools at different sites across Newcastle. A rehearsal day on 18th May at the Newcastle Basketball Stadium is scheduled so that we can work with our choreographer and other schools to learn our dance. On 25th May and 15th June, we will travel to the Newcastle Entertainment Centre to further rehearse our item and practise going on and off the stage.
Star Struck gives thousands of students from NSW Public schools the opportunity to perform in front of an audience of up to 5000 people. Our students are excited and looking forward to this wonderful experience. Should you wish to see our Jesmond Public School Star Struck group perform this year, you can purchase tickets through Ticketek for either the 7pm show on Friday 16th June or the 1pm show on Saturday 17th June. We would love to see you there!
Homework and English Literacy Program (HELP)
The Homework and English Literacy Program (HELP) has commenced for Term 2. The first afternoon was a success! Our students met each of the volunteers, enjoyed a delicious afternoon tea and worked in small groups supported by a helper to complete their homework. Students will continue to attend the program from 3.00pm - 4.15pm each Monday this term.
University of Newcastle PE Skills Program
Students in Kindergarten to Year 4 had a wonderful time on Wednesday participating in a PE skills program run by Health and Physical Education students from the University of Newcastle. Each Wednesday, for the next five weeks, students will develop their fundamental movement skills, sportsmanship and resilience. We are extremely grateful to be participating in this wonderful program.
