MacArthur Elementary School
January 10, 2019
Notes from the Principal
Dear MacArthur Families,
I would like to welcome everyone back from the Winter Break. I would also like to welcome any new families that started this week here at MacArthur School. Our new 2020 year is off to a great start!
Below are some important dates that are coming up.
January 13th the New Semester begins
January 20th No School for the students (Happy Martin Luther King Jr. Day)
January 21st is LEAD Team (Don’t forget to send your child in their LEAD shirt)
January 23rd Report Cards get sent home with the students
January 27th Kindness Week
Safety is a top priority for all of us here at MacArthur and everyone within the Crown Point School Corporation. As you know, our students practice on a regular basis fire, tornado, and lock down drills. The staff has been receiving ALICE training this school year, as well. ALICE stands for Alert, Lockdown, Inform, Counter, and Evacuate. In more recent times, when we think of safety in schools we typically think of safety from an intruder. However, with all the social media available to students I would bet that many don’t view social media as a possible danger or threat---but it is! I would encourage you to limit your child’s exposure with social media (i.e. u-tube, Tik Toc, texting, Twitter, Facebook, Snapchat, Instagram, etc.). As good parents, I know we can never stop being vigilant with what our students see every day. Thank you for always being a watchful parent.
Have a Great Weekend.

News from Our School Counselor
Parents,
Save the date! January 27th starts Kindness Week here at MacArthur! Our school will be participating in the Great Kindness Challenge, a week dedicated to doing kind deeds. Did you know that being kind can not only help our minds, but our bodies too? According to research, “People who volunteer tend to experience fewer aches and pains. Giving help to others protects overall health twice as much as aspirin protects against heart disease. Also, about half of participants in one study reported that they feel stronger and more energetic after helping others; many also reported feeling calmer and less depressed, with increased feelings of self-worth.” Another great benefit to being kind is that statistically compassionate people have 23% less cortisol, the stress hormone.
Have a great break!

PTO News
The Douglas MacArthur Elementary School PTO is excited to host our first annual Playground Fundraiser Gala on February 22, 2020 at the Cedar Lake Lighthouse Restaurant. This event is intended to raise much-needed funds for a new playground purchase and installation at Douglas MacArthur Elementary School in Cedar Lake, Indiana, which costs upward of $60,000 per section installed. Sections of the existing playground at the school are currently in deteriorating condition and in dire need of replacement. We believe that this fundraiser will put us one step closer towards creating a new safe place for the children to play, exercise and nurture the crucial physical and social development skills fostered by outdoor play.
We cordially invite you to consider joining our endeavor by purchasing tickets for this exciting event. This year’s gala is themed “The Roaring Twenties in 2020” and will feature hors d’oeuvres, dinner, dancing, dessert, a silent auction, cash bar and door prizes. Tickets are $100 per person and can be purchased online at www.macpto.com. This fun night out is just one week after Valentine’s Day – so consider saving your date night out to join us !

January fruit of the month is Grapefruit
Grapefruit can look intimidating if you have never tried it before because it is so large, however it is actually a cross between a sweet orange and a pomelo fruit. Grapefruit also has the nickname of “Forbidden Fruit”. The word “grape” in grapefruit refers to how it grows, which is similar to grape clusters. The three countries that produce the most grapefruit are: 1) China 2) USA 3) Mexico. Grapefruit is known to lower cholesterol and is a delicious citric fruit to add to your diet!
Students who buy a hot lunch on Friday January 16 will get a tasting of grapefruit!
Pink Grapefruit Sorbet
3 large pink or red grapefruit
1 cup white sugar
¼ cup light corn syrup
4 cups water
1 dash red food coloring (optional)
Use a vegetable peeler or zester to remove 3 long strips of peel (just the zest, not the pith) from the grapefruits. Set aside. Squeeze out 2 cups of grapefruit juice. In a saucepan, combine the grapefruit, sugar, corn syrup, and water. Bring to a boil to dissolve the sugar. Cook for about 2 minutes and cool in an ice bath or the refrigerator. Strain the grapefruit juice through a sieve or strainer to remove the pulp. Discard the peel. Stir in the sugar syrup and the food coloring (if you are using it) one drop at a time until it reaches a light pink color. Pour mixture in the container of an ice cream maker and freeze according to instructions. Transfer to a container and freeze until firm before serving. Enjoy!!
