Writing Workshop
This week we continued writing our first piece of the year. We learned how to create exciting beginnings, how to add dialogue and how to revise to make our piece more interesting. We also had a peer revising activity where we heard five classmates writing pieces. After listening to their writing piece we wrote one part of the piece we enjoyed and something we were wondering. We will be finishing up our personal narratives next week by publishing our pieces!
Peer Revising
MATH-PLACE VALUE
We finished our first topic on place value. This week students reviewed how to round, constructed arguments based on word problems, reviewed using Nearpod and took our Topic 1 test. Tests were sent home today. They DO NOT need to be returned. Next week, we will start Topic 2 on fluently adding and subtracting multi-digit numbers.
Language Arts
Reading: This week we read two selections. One was a narrative poem called "Yes, We are Latinos". We discussed heritage and cultural and how being proud of who you are and your cultural is important in shaping your life. We also discussed how different experiences can affect you both positively and negatively. We learned about monitoring and clarifying while reading and how context clues can help with comprehension. Next, we read "The Year of the Rat." This story was about a young girl who learns to be brave and also sticks up for herself. In this we discussed the theme/lesson which was "Being brave may be challenging but comes with rewards." Finally, we independently read a short story and answered comprehension questions. The questions consisted of evidence found directly in the text and inferencing.

Studies Weekly/Social Studies
This week we finished up unit one on Prehistoric PA! We learned who William Penn was, learned that the first oil well was in PA and visited the Constitution center through a virtual field trip. On Monday we will be working with a partner and will use our newspapers to work on a study guide for our quiz. On Tuesday students will work independently on the quiz but will be able to use their magazines to help show evidence. We will also begin our cardboard box challenge!
