A Special Note from HPETA (Hanover Physical Education Teachers' Association)
Dear Parents/Guardians of Students in the Hanover School Division:
We would like to take this opportunity to wish all of our students a very active and healthy school year. We extend best wishes to all of our student athletes, coaches and volunteers, as they embark in their new seasons of Volleyball, Basketball, Badminton, Track and Field, Soccer and other sports.
All new parent volunteers are reminded to get their required criminal checks done, if they have not already done so. If you are volunteering to drive our students to any practices or tournaments, we also require a Volunteer Driving Form to be completed. Our school division requires this of any parent volunteers that drive, or take part in any extra-curricular or school based activities. Please see your School Administrator or Physical Education teacher for these forms.
A very important note to all parents: students are NOT to wear any form of jewelry during their Physical Education classes. Students are asked to remove all forms of jewelry (rings, necklaces, earrings and studs—of ALL forms, and any other fashion jewelry). Dangling and obtrusive jewelry pose very serious safety risks, during any form of physical activity. The Safety Guidelines for Physical Activity in Manitoba Schools clearly states in its guidelines and protocols, that wearing any form of jewelry IS NOT PERMITTED. Jewelry that cannot be removed and which presents a safety concern (Medical Alert Identification) must be taped over. Medical Alert jewelry is the only form of jewelry that will be permitted in Physical Education Classes, or extra-curricular programs. We sincerely appreciate your cooperation in regards to this matter.
Wishing everyone a fun, safe, educational and successful academic and athletic school year.
Let's Get Moving!
Physical activity helps to raise:
* Endorphins (pleasurable feelings)
* Norepinephrine (helps to activate the brain)
* Dopamine (improves a person's mood, their motivation, allows them to focus better)

Reminder!
You may also send information regarding your child's absence through the HSD Parent Portal. Later in this newsletter there will be "refresher instructions" for those who have not yet had the opportunity to create a Parent Portal Account.
Thank you!
Remember- We're Peanut Free!
HSD Parent Portal
The Parent Portal provides secure online access to your child's student information. With a username and password, you can access data for each of your children attending an HSD school.
On the Parent Portal you are able to:
- verify that the information we have for your student is accurate (address, phone numbers, email addresses, etc.)
- submit attendance notes, excusing your child from classes
- check school fee balances (field trip amounts/sports fees etc. are now added to the school accounts) and make payments on your account
- view current and past report cards for your child** See important note below regarding report cards
Before creating a Parent Access Account, you will first need to obtain a unique Access ID for each student profile that you want added to your account. The required Access IDs, along with account setup instructions, were sent to all eligible parents/guardians at the beginning of the school year. If you did not receive this email, or require it to be sent again, please contact the school office. Access ID's will not be given out by phone, only by email so that we can be sure that this information is being sent to the parents/guardians on record at the school. Upon receipt of your child's Access ID, visit hsd.ca/parent-portal to proceed with account setup. It is easy and only takes a few minutes!
Important Information Regarding Report Cards
Report cards will no longer be emailed to parents. They will be uploaded to the parent portal site and will be available to parents by 3:00 p.m. on the day report cards are due to be "sent home". Only those students whose parents do not have access to the Parent Portal will receive printed copies (students will bring them home on report card day).
If you have any questions about the Parent Portal, please do not hesitate to contact the school. We believe that this is a valuable tool to help the parents stay connected and informed!
Coming Up!!
Celebration of Learning
SMS loves to celebrate! Especially when it comes to celebrating our kids! So this year, we're changing the focus of our traditional Parent Teacher Interviews to a Celebration of Learning. The goal is for students to share with you, their parents and caregivers, what they're learning and how they're learning it. As a division we are working in a Deeper Learning model which means that the focus is for students to learn the skills, dispositions and values necessary for them to contribute to a very rapidly changing world.
We continue to value our communication with our families which is why we have our Interim Reporting to Parents in October, use Bright Arrow, See Saw and Remind. The staff at SMS know the importance of teaming with the families of our students and are continually connected through email, phone calls and meetings. We always welcome the opportunity to work alongside with you and invite you to contact your child's teachers, members of our Student Care Team or Administration should you have any concerns, questions or comments.
On Thursday, December 5 from 4:30-7:30 p.m., you are invited to share in your child's accomplishments so far this year as they reflect on their learning in a variety of different areas. You are welcome to tour through the school to see where your child reads, learns math, experiments with science, tinkers in Makerspace and builds in Industrial Arts and Human Ecology. We're excited to see you!
SMS Annual Book Fair
Just in time for Christmas! Students can check it out all week - and parents/friends/family, you can check it out during, before or after our Celebration of Learning on December 5th! See you there!!
If you would be interested in helping out with our Book Fair, please contact Mrs. Rebizant (rrebizant@hsd.ca) or Mrs. Desautels (ldesautels@hsd.ca). Thank you!
