The Star

Ruby Bridges - where the STARS come to shine!

Hello from the principal's desk!

Just finished Day 3 over here, and I must say, it has been an incredible start to the school year! I don't know if you've seen me out in front of the school at drop off, but I LOVE being out there! All the kids so excited to come to school, all the parents sad to see their babies go. I am learning a few names so far... thank you for being patient with me. You can really feel the energy of this school as those children and families come from all over. Magical.

I have to send out another request, and it is not going to be my last... please join PTA. It only costs $10 per family. I promised them we could get 200 members. It is the least you can do to help the PTA, which gives back to our school in SO many ways! Here is their website. If, in addition to joining, you can also make a donation... well, that would be wonderful too! We would love any amount, from an extra $10 up to what, maybe $250? Any generous donors out there willing to help us out??

On a last note, I wanted to let you know we have started "Second Chance" breakfast. Our cafeteria will open for kids who missed before school breakfast at 9:15. Kids can grab breakfast, again if they missed it that morning, up through 9:40. They will have to eat and run though, to try and catch recess before it is over! Although students in grades 3-5 don't have recess, their teachers may consider letting them grab a bar and return to class. Please talk to your teacher if you would like more information.

Upcoming events at Ruby Bridges

8/31 - Back to School Night. We changed the original date on this event, due to a conflict with the Jewish New Year festival - Rosh Hashana. We will give a keynote address on the outdoor stage at 6:15 and have our first class tour at 6:30, second one at 7:00. Please come, it is important!

9/4 - No School, Labor Day

9/8 - Spirit Day Wear your favorite color!

9/26 - SSC (School Site Council) 3:30 - 4:30

We need your help!

Please email Mr. Woodward if you are able to help in any way!

  • Lunch supervision - Had a couple of people say they were interested, but no one has showed up to help yet! We need more adults during lunch to help keep our campus safe. Want to come and play basketball or four square during recess? Hang out with your Kindergartner or 5th grader and keep an eye on them and their friends during lunch? Come on out and help us during lunch supervision!
  • School Site Council - One of the most important groups on campus! The SSC meets 6 times throughout the year after school, and is composed of Ruby staff and parents. We set school budget, look at school goals, and do really important work. I think I need 2 or 3 more parents. Email me!
  • Garden upkeep - We are partnering with Project Peace East Bay to get our garden in order. We then want to keep it up, build new planter boxes, and maybe get a program going. Do you have a green thumb and a desire to work with kids? Let me know!
  • School sign? Crickets on this one too folks. I need help updating the sign regularly. Maybe every other week put up new announcements? I am doing it now, seriously 15 minutes every week. Someone can help out on this, right?

Hello from the Ruby Bridges PTA

Recess yard is off limits until 8:10

All families should wait with their children by the gates until the 8:10 bell. If you arrive earlier than that, you should report to the cafeteria WITH your children until 8:10. We keep the recess yard closed until 8:10 and can't have any kids playing on it, even if there parents are present. It’s a safety issue. Thanks!

Drop off zones

The drop off and pick up zones are for immediate loading and unloading of kids. Parents should not park their cars here and walk their children to class. Please have your kids ready to exit the car, on the school side of the street, when you pull up. Say goodbye, give them a kiss, and let them go. If you need to walk your child into school, please use street parking!

ThinkStretch summer workbook

Students who received and worked on their ThinkStretch Workbook over the summer should return their workbook to their teacher so that they can receive a recognition! All levels of completion of the workbook will be recognized – so if you finished the entire book or even just a part of it, please turn it in. Any questions? Please see Mrs. Furuichi Fong!

Hello from STEAM Lab

Hello STARS!

The 1st day of school was quite exciting with our Solar Eclipse Party! Three awesome helpers came up on stage to model how a partial solar eclipse works and show the crowd how to safely wear our PTA provided solar glasses. Thanks Jameson, Lavender, and Adina for your excellent acting skills! This week, I will be working on getting our new STEAM equipment unpacked in the Studio, room 401. I will also be working on getting the Lab, room 402, up and running very soon! Thank you to all of the teachers for rockin’ a busy 1st day with ease and for students following the 4Bs to keep our eyes safe from sun rays! More updates next week!

Ruby Wrap

Don't love the title... have a better idea? I would like to try and leave you with something to take away, something you can try at home.

Check out another podcast from Brains On. Listen to it in the car with your kids this weekend. They will love it!

Deep Sea vs. Outer Space

Social Media presence

We are going to really work hard to share all the wonderful things going on this year through our PTA Facebook page, PTA Instagram, and school Twitter. Please try and participate along with us! It is super fun when we can all enjoy the MANY positive events that happen here, even if we weren't there in person to see them!
