20 Years of Shark Pride
Our theme this year is "20 Years of Shark Pride." Our goal is to highlight all of the wonderful things we have done at TJE over the last 20 years. Some of you have been a part of the shark family for many years, and know the greatest we possess with our building. We hope as we spotlight our school, we bring back some great memories and create new ones.
This month, we'd light to spotlight our UNITY program!
This school-wide program was adapted from the Ron Clark Academy in Atlanta, Georgia. It helps to build unity throughout the school.
The program consist of ten houses that serve as a small family within the larger school family. Upon enrollment, the students spin the wheel to determine their house for their entire time at Thelma Jones. Every student and staff is a member of a house.
Each house is represented by a unique color and name. The names mean unity in different languages. Staff members work with their houses to deliver lessons that teach self-esteem, tolerance, teamwork, and unity.
We kicked off our Unity program for the 2023-2024 school year on Friday, September 8th. Timberview joined in on the fun. It was a great celebration and the students had a great time.
A Message From Nurse Spence
From Your School Nurse
Welcome back to school. We have started the school year out with a bang, already seeing cases of COVID, Strep and Flu. YOU, our wonderful parents, are our first line of defense to keep our school healthy. With COVID cases we are seeing low grade fever, body aches and fatigue. If your child is ill, please keep them at home.
We follow the Texas Department of State Health Services policies on excluding sick students from school.
· For COVID positives, the policy states that we exclude students from school for 5 days from the start of symptoms.
· Students with a temperature of 100.0 or greater must remain out of school until fever free for 24 hours without the use of fever reducing medications.
· If your student is vomiting or has diarrhea, they are excluded from school until they are free of symptoms for 24 hours.
The school clinic phone number is 817-299-6950. It is my suggestion that you save that number to your phone so that you do not mistake it for Spam or a telemarketer call when the nurse calls you about your child.
We do offer telehealth through Goodside Health in the school clinic this year. If the nurse feels it could benefit the student and family, she will call the parents to ask if they would like a telehealth visit. If the student is already registered for Goodside Health, then the parent will receive a link via text message to be included in the video visit (parents must be present to do a telehealth visit). A provider will see the student via video chat and can order a strep, COVID or flu test that your school nurse can administer on site. The school nurse also has medications in the clinic that the provider can order for the student. If a prescription is needed, they will call it in to your pharmacy. Families will be billed through their insurance, or for those without insurance, Goodside Health offers a low cash pay rate to ensure accessibility for all. Visit www.goodsidehealth.com/billing-inquiries/ for billing questions.
Registering for SchoolMed is easy! Sign-up online at gsh.co/register
Accidents happen at all grade levels and sometimes we need a change of clothes. Please always have a complete extra set of clothes in your child’s backpack. We hate to disturb your workday to bring your child a change of clothes because they spilled sticky syrup all over themselves!
Welcome Back!

Health Screenings to begin
NOTICE OF STATE REQUIRED HEALTH SCREENINGS
Dear Parents/Guardians:
State law requires that all public schools hold annual health screenings for students. We will be screening students throughout the fall semester on all campuses. Students will be screened for Hearing, Vision, and Acanthosis Nigricans (a visual marker that may indicate possible signs of type 2 diabetes) in grade levels PK, KG 1, 3, 5, 7 and all New to District students. Please ensure that your child is wearing his/her eyeglasses/contacts to school daily.
Female students in grade levels 5 and 7 and males in grade 8 will be screened for Scoliosis (a curvature of the spine). Boys and girls will be screened separately.
If further evaluation by your doctor is needed, parents will be notified in writing. Please note that these screenings do not replace your child’s need for regular health care and check-ups. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact me.
Thank you for your cooperation.

Party invitations will only be passed out to the whole class or for girl/boy specific parties. Our goal is to never make students feel excluded. This is our practice at Thelma Jones. If you have any questions please don't hesitate to reach out to Mrs. Rhines.
You may send treat bags for your student's birthday. Treat bags will be passed out at the end of the day and sent home with students. Ideas for treat bags include: stickers, pencils, small party favors, and wrapped candy. You may not bring food for your student's birthday. Things like cupcakes and cookies will not be accepted.
When having lunch with your student, please be mindful that you may only eat with your student in the designated area. I know it's nice to meet your child's friends, but we are not allowed to put other students in your care without parent permission. Once lunch is over, you will need to checkout in the front. No visitors on the playground.
