East Middle School Ski and Snowboard
The Grand Blanc Middle School Ski program offers discounted lift tickets and rental prices, as well as the opportunity to learn to ski or snowboard safely. Students don’t need any prior skiing or snowboarding experience. Our club meets on Thursday evenings during the winter months, and joining is easy! Fill out and turn in the Ski and Snowboard Club Registration Form available in the school office or email swambaug@gbcs.org to have a digital copy sent to you. Payments can be made directly to Mr. Wambaugh at school in room 218 and (NEW THIS YEAR!) using Payschools. Students have the option of staying after school to take a bus to Mt. Holly. Students will then be signed out from Mt. Holly by 8:30 p.m. by the person authorized to pick them up. An informational meeting will be held Thursday, November 14th at 7pm at East Middle School, with a representative from Mt. Holly here to answer your questions.
News from Team 7
On November 19th, Team Seven will be hosting a fundraiser to benefit Flint Animals Matter (FAM). This nonprofit outreach organization’s goal is to educate pet owners in Genesee County. The outreach group focuses on increasing quality life of dogs by getting them off chains and into their homes, preventing heartworm, vaccinating, spaying and neutering, and improving their overall living conditions. All East Middle School students will have the opportunity to participate in this fundraiser by purchasing raffle tickets and trying their luck in games to support the organization. Items that students have a chance of winning include PAWZ t-shirts, “surrendered” stuffed animals, animal themed food items, pet accessories and pet treats. We are looking forward to all East Middle School students learning about the dogs and owners who this organization supports in our community.
Honor Roll at EMS
Recognition is given to students after each marking period for outstanding academic achievement. An East Middle School Honor Roll has been maintained to recognize student effort and performance. To be on the honor roll, a student must be successful in both the academic and citizenship areas.
1. Academic - receive all A’s or all A’s and B’s
2. Citizenship - receive all 4’s or all 4’s and 3’s on a scale of 4-1. Citizenship is based on work habits, behavior, attitude, cooperation, courtesy, motivation, social engagement and self-regulation. A copy of the NonAcademic Rubic can be found on our website.
Mrs. Kruse's Corner
The school year is well underway. The students have settled into their middle school lives and we are all striving for a successful year.
Even as middle school students, it is imperative for children of this age to continue to maintain the homework structure used as they progressed through their elementary years. An emphasis still needs to be placed on a homework routine, such as having a quiet place to study, reviewing their work, and establishing a time when they get home that is devoted to homework. As parents/guardians, ask your students questions about what they learned in school and inquire about their homework. Take a look at their homework and see if they have completed and understood what was expected of them. Also, check your student’s planner. Email or call their teachers if you have a concern. Our website is another valuable communication tool. Please schedule a parent-teacher conference. This lets your student know you are interested in what he or she is doing.
Middle school students’ lives become busier during this time and even though they are trying to establish their independence, they still need structure and guidance. This is a wonderful time in your child’s life but it can also be very challenging. With these things in mind, let’s continue to work together to have a great year!
Sincerely,
Mrs. Kruse, Principal
Grand Blanc East Middle School
Food Allergy Awareness
There are about 5.9 million kids living with food allergies, 1 in 13 kids under the age of 18, which is about 2 in every classroom. The holiday season from now through the new year poses threats to kids trying to manage food allergies. We would like to increase awareness about food allergies by reminding students and parents of the following:
*Food allergies are very serious. It is not a joking matter.
*Reactions can be life threatening
*Preventing exposure is crucial
*Don’t share food, forks, knives, spoons, or straws with friends
*Wash hands before and after eating. Some people with food allergies can get sick even if they are touched by something that has a tiny bit of food on it.
*If a friend with allergies is sick, tell an adult right away. This will make sure that your friend gets help and gets the medicine they need to feel better.
*Food allergies can make Halloween even scarier. Please remember not to bring anything with nuts into the classroom.
FISH Holiday Food Drive at EMS
FISH Holiday Food Drive
The annual FISH Holiday Food Drive will begin Monday, November 18, 2019 and end December 7, 2019. We will be collecting food, toiletries, and cleaning items for Grand Blanc families through the FISH organization. East Middle School staff and students have a tradition of generously supporting our FISH families. As we begin our plans for Thanksgiving, let us remember those less fortunate. Bring your donations to the tables in the atrium for counting each morning. Advisory classes will be competing to win the annual FISH Breakfast award. The top three Advisory hours collecting the most items of food will receive a special breakfast prepared by Mrs. Kruse, Mr. Turnbow, Mrs. Heemsoth, and Mrs. Gorton.
