WELLNESS DAY - THANK YOU!

Our Wellness Day began with a lunch of locally grown and oh so yummy fresh fruit and vegetables. Thank you to Maricela and our Child Nutrition Department for an incredible lunch! The day ended with a spectacular afternoon filled with martial arts, dance, basketball, tennis, soccer and yoga! This fantastic afternoon of activity would not have happened if not for our very own Nicole Sommerfeld! Thank you Nicole for all the time, energy and pure heart that you put into bringing this wonderful event to life for our kiddos!! And a huge thank you to all of our amazing partners! Hopefully your child participated in Orion's Wellness Day after school event and experienced all the fun. As you plan after school activities and summer camps for your kids, please consider supporting the organizations that support Orion:

SBAC TESTNG CONTINUES

April 30th - May 17th State Testing

Our 3rd-5th graders have worked unbelievably hard these past two weeks on their State SBAC tests. We are so very proud of all of them for showing such focus, determination and perseverance! The students still have one more week of testing to go!

We thank EVERYONE in our community for supporting our hard working test takers by doing the following:

**ALL STUDENTS (K-5TH) SHOULD ARRIVE TO SCHOOL NO LATER THAN 8:08AM. CHILDREN WHO ARRIVE LATE WILL NOT BE ABLE TO ENTER THEIR CLASSROOM AND WILL HAVE TO DO A MAKE-UP TEST.

**FROM 8:10-9:55AM THE SCHOOL WILL BE ON SILENT MODE. NO ONE SHOULD BE IN THE HALLS OR PLAYGROUND. WE NEED A QUIET AND CALM TESTING ENVIRONMENT.

Additionally, parents of 3rd-5th graders should follow the additional guidelines below:

1. Help your children to get to bed on time.

2. Ensure your children eat a protein rich breakfast.

3. Keep your morning routines with your kiddos as calm as possible. This will enable your kiddos to start their day calm and centered and ready to tackle the state tests.

Thank you so VERY much for your support!

IMPORTANT SAFETY ISSUE

We are having many students head to the playground right after school to wait for their rides. This is a HUGE safety concern. We DO NOT HAVE STAFF SUPERVISION on the playground after school. Please remind your children to go DIRECTLY to one of the two STAFF SUPERVISED locations for after school pickup:

1) The Back Gate on Warren Street

2) The Front of school on Allerton Street

If children are not picked up by 2:45PM, our STAFF will walk them down to the office. The kiddos must wait in the hallway of the front office where we can supervise them. Please help us ensure the after school safety of all our kiddos!

PARK DAY - VOLUNTEERS NEEDED

It is hard to believe that we only have 19 days of school left! And that means that we have only 18 days until our fun filled Park Day at Stafford Park on Thursday, June 6th. The teachers are already hard at work planning exciting activities for our kiddos. However, SAFETY is our first priority, so we need your help! We will need 40 parent volunteers to supervise our kiddos at the park from 9AM - 12:30PM. Our wonderful Orion parent, Tara Dal Maso has taken the lead in organizing our parent volunteers (Thank you, Tara). Please sign up with the link below and check in with Tara at the Park when you arrive. She will assign you to your specific location and will provide you with one our our lovely safety vests!

The representatives form our site our: Stephanie Calsing (Teacher), Jessica Bryski (Parent), Aaron Hand (Parent) and Julie Tao (Parent). They will be working hard over the next several weeks to finalize the School Site Plan (SPSA) for next year.

Please note the following important next steps in the transition process:

1) May 31st - The John Gill community will host a Field Day for our current Kinder - 5th Graders (Time and Logistics: TBD). This will a wonderful opportunity for our kiddos to spend some time together before the beginning of next year.

ORION STATEMENT OF UNDERSTANDING

Orion's new Statement of Understanding will replace the Orion Parent Participation Agreement we have been using for many, many years. Our SSC team began developing this new document in mid December, and it was approved by the Redwood City School Board at the end of February.

The document describes our Orion Alternative School Program, the importance of our Voluntary Parent Participation Hours, the logistics of our Voluntary Parent Participation Hours and a description of and a consent to enroll in our Alternative School Program.

In addition, as part of our new Voluntary Participation Guidelines, we will no longer be tracking volunteer hours, so there is no need to turn in hours sheets for the remainder of this year. However, THE FOUNDATION OF ORION'S SUCCESS IS THE COLLECTIVE VOLUNTARY PARTICIPATION OF FAMILIES. To keep this foundation strong, we request that families volunteer 72 hours per year.

This new document was distributed to everyone a few weeks ago in our Friday's Folder. If you need a new one, please see Liz in the office. Please read our New Statement of Understanding, sign it and return it to school by Friday, May 17th.

THIS IS FOR OUR CURRENT SCHOOL YEAR: 2018-2019. A NEW FORM WILL NEED TO BE COMPLETED IN AUGUST FOR THE 2019-2020 SCHOOL YEAR.

URGENT HELP NEEDED!!

We are in DESPERATE need of 1-2 paid lunchtime yard supervisors. The hours are 11:50AM - 12:50PM each day. WE ESPECIALLY NEED HELP ON MONDAYS, TUESDAYS AND WEDNESDAYS. The hourly pay is $14 per hour.
