Region 20 Highlights Ms. Barbara Smejkal as Making a Difference
Ms. Smejkal's commitment to including and encouraging parents during this difficult period in our educational history is unmatched. She spends a lot of her energy communicating with parents, supporting parents, and finding new ways to engage our families and community during this time of limited "outside" contact. Her most recent endeavor was to orchestrate a drive-through car parade for our families. Ms. Smejkal collaborated with Mr. Rodney Rodriguez. With Mr. Rodriguez’s hard work, resources, and costumes staff members dressed up as different holiday characters and treat bags were handed out. A lot of time and energy was put into the parade, but it was all worth it to see the smiles on the student's faces. In January she is supporting an initiative to hold virtual "parent" classrooms.
Ms. Anderson, a kindergarten teachers, came up with a fabulous idea and Ms. Smejkal supported it fully. Ms. Anderson responded to our parents showing an interest in learning more so that they can support their children more. These classes will cover everything from behavior techniques to the most researched-based, effective ways to support your child's literacy development. She also wants to research grant opportunities so we can add an outdoor stage to the back of our school so we can invite parents to interact in a more Covid safe environment.
Even though there are so many more examples, Ms. Smejkal also engineered and supported a "Goodnight Miller's Point" program. Every Sunday night 7 different bedtime stories are uploaded to Class Dojo and the Miller's Point Facebook page so that each night a different bedtime story is read to our students by our staff. Ms. Smejkal truly is making a difference.

There is a great need for additional reliable substitute teachers to help in classrooms where our teachers are at home teaching remotely. If you or someone you know is willing and available to help as a substitute teacher, visit our Employment menu to complete the application. Other critical need areas include Adventure Club Aides, Special Education Aides, and Custodians.
Please feel free to contact 210-945-5101 if you have questions.
Board Appreciation Month and Board Member Spotlights
There are some great reasons to celebrate and thank the board members who serve Judson ISD.
Serving as a locally elected board member means going through an election and making difficult decisions for the district, its employees, and its children. It means being available to hear from concerned parents in the grocery store, at the game, or over the backyard fence. It means committing to the time it takes to do the job right. And in Texas, there is no pay for school board members, and there are specific training requirements, creating further demands on their time. In short, why would anyone volunteer for this role?
Fortunately, in every community, caring adults have signed on for the responsibility and hard work of making our schools the best they can be. They immerse themselves in learning what they need to know to make good decisions that will provide for students, from the very youngest to the graduating senior. Trustees are public servants who generously work to benefit the most vulnerable members of each community.
Take a moment to recognize your local trustees. Take a moment to honor the work they are doing to help your students blast off into the future. Take a moment to say thank you for the work school board members are doing on our behalf.

Free/Reduced Lunch Applications: It Still Matters
The Judson ISD Child Nutrition Department wants you to know that even though all meals are no cost to students through the end of 2020, the Free/Reduced Price Meal applications are still critical…to you and your student because it’s about more than just food.
Did you know that this application also...
- Can provide discounted fees to register for AP tests (from $64 to $18)
- Help pay fees to participate in sports
- Can reduce costs of college applications (discounted or even no cost)
- Help you qualify for low-cost internet service
- Has a bearing on funding for school programs and services for students
The no-cost meal program will, at some point, end and we want to make sure that your child gets a nutritious meal without financial roadblocks. See if you qualify. Or, you can get going by filling out the Free/Reduced Meal application now.
These applications are accepted all year, but the earlier you apply, the sooner you can benefit from meals and discounts.
*Note: If your child attends a CEP (Community Eligibility Provision) designated school, you do not need to submit this application.
