LGBTQ+

Explained

Why I chose this topic

I decided to do choose this topic because I believe most children (and some adults) are not educated on this topic. It is important for people to learn about this from a young age, so that they find it normal.

Defined

LGBTQ+ is an acronym for Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, and Queer or questioning. The plus at the end is to include all the other sexualities and genders in the community, sutch as: Asexual, Aromantic, Intersex, Non-binary, Pansexual, Agender, e.t.c. This group consists of people who dont soley experience attraction to the opposite gender, or do not identify with their birth gender. It can also be writen LGBT, or LGBTQIA for Intersex and Asexual.

History

Homosexuality dates back to ancient civilization from 10000 BC - 100, where it was normal, before Christianity was introduced. Afterwards, it was punishable by death.

Netherlands became the first country to legalize gay marrige in 2001.

In 1971, the first gay marrige was conducted in the U.S, before it became illgal in most states by 1994.

On the 26 of June, 2015, all state bans were struck down and it became legal in the U.S.

Today

Today, only 29 of 195 countries have legalized gay marrige, Costa Rica being the most recent on the 26th of May, 2020, becoming the first Central American country to make it legal. This means that the community has yet to gain rights in 166 countries. It is still believed to be punishable by death in one country: Iran.

A few laws that affect the LGBT+ community are: not being able to adopt, no anti-descrimination law, hate crimes performed on them not being punishable, acess to gendered bathrooms for transgenders, and legal recognition of reassigned gender.
